Pikkusydämiä / Little hearts

Talo on kaunis, mutten yövy siellä, vaan äidin hoteissa. En halua laittaa lämpimiä vesiä päälle tai kytkeä jääkaappia seinään. Torkkukoon talo rauhassa, me emme asu siellä enää.

Viisi päivää maalla menee nopeasti, huonekaluja kantaessa ja viimeisiä komeron nurkkia tyhjentäessä. Odotan pankin pihalla äitiä, joka nostaa rahaa automaatista. Katselen samalla tien toisella puolella nököttävää kunnanvirastoa ja mietin: tuolla olin töissä, tuohon kohtaan laitoin aina auton parkkiin. Oloni on epätodellinen. Alkaa sataa ripottaa. Istumme saunan kuistilla ja syömme kiukaalla lämmitettyä makkaraa.

Viimeisenä päivänä maalla ukkostaa. Tummat pilvet kerääntyvät horisonttiin, kaukana jyrisee, kohta sataa. Nyhdän suolaheinää kukkapenkistä sen minkä ennen lähtöäni ehdin.

The first thing I notice is that the roses next to the barn are all dead, every single bush. Then I look at the biggest perennial bed: it looks lopsided and odd somehow. "Prepare yourself for when you see your garden," mom had warned me earlier. "Last winter was really rough." I haven't been back to our house in the country since I left in late January, and I'm in for a shock: the devastation is so complete. Over half of my phloxes and evening primroses are dead, all of my heleniums, echinaceas, malvas and the bleeding-hearts. At least the ligularias bloom beautifully, as do the Pacific bleeding-hearts, the ones we call "little hearts" in Finnish. The day lilies have spread nicely. The perennial beds are pushing dockweeds and fireweeds, the greenhouse grows only thistles. Our house stands on top of the peninsula, all quiet: its rooms are empty and they still smell of paint, after all this time. It's such a pretty house, but I don't sleep there. I stay at my mom's so that I don't have to turn on the water heater or plug in the fridge. The house doesn't feel like a home anymore, anyway.

Five days in the countryside go by fast. We carry furniture and pack up stuff that Chris didn't have time to pack before the movers came. I take my mom grocery shopping, and while she withdraws cash from the ATM, I look at the municipality offices on the other side of the road: that's where I worked, that's where I parked my car every morning. It all feels a little unreal. In the evening I bump into semi-acquaintances at the lakeside bar; they hug me and ask me how I'm doing these days. "Better", I say, and ask them if they know someone who is looking for a move-in-ready house with a lakeview. Next evening mom and I go to the sauna. We plunge into the warm lake, the water striders leap on the surface before us, then it starts to rain. We sit on the porch and eat sausages we cooked on the hot stones of the sauna.

Thunder rolls in on my last day in the countryside. Dark clouds gather in the horizon, there's some lightning. I yank out as much dockweeds as I have time for, but it starts to rain, and soon my train leaves back for the city.

Siirtolapuutarhassa / At communal gardens

I no longer have my own garden, but luckily I have the chance to admire the fruits of other people's labor. At the nearby communal gardens peonies, lilies, foxgloves and roses are in bloom. As we walked by potato patches and rhubarb bushes, I didn't really feel too bad of a sting in my heart, even though there are moments when I miss sticking my hands into the dirt. I snapped a few photos, smelled the gorgeous scent of a myriad of flowers, and took off my imaginary hat to the hard-working urban gardeners and farmers.

I got to thinking about owning: there are things that one has to have, and others that can belong to someone else. In the former group are a pretty dress or two, time for a stroll, and peace of mind. In the latter: flowers in bloom.

Fall (to pieces)

Harmaan ja sateisen työviikon jälkeen paistaa aurinko. Taivas on lemmikinsininen, puidun viljan nysät hohtavat vielä haalean kultaisena. Leivinuuni on lämmin, Audrey makoilee pankolla tyytyväisenä.

Helsingissä on tänä viikonloppuna kirjamessut. Tänä vuonna tyydyn istuskelemaan tuvan lämmössä, selailemaan marraskuun Vogue'a ja aloittelemaan viime vuoden Finlandia-voittajaa. Taustalla soi Patsy Cline. Voisi olla huonomminkin.

- - -

After a dreary work week, the sun is finally shining. The sky is the color of forget-me-nots, the stubby, harvested fields glimmer like brushed gold. Our heating oven is warm and Audrey lies on top, stretched out and happy. I spent some time outside, cutting down the frost-bit perennials. It's the end of the gardening season once again. So much yard work was left undone after this past summer and fall, but as the locals often say, there is always more work to be done. Next year, then, I guess.

Tomorrow night we'll turn the clocks backward. This video summarizes my thoughts on the process. Very soon I'll be leaving for work in total darkness, and if I'm lucky, I'll see a sliver of daylight on my way home. I wish I could hibernate.

Helsinki Book Fair takes place this weekend. For whatever reason my autumnal Helsinki visits never seem to align with the book fair, but I just decided that next year I'll be there, even if it kills me. This year I'll have to settle for listening to Patsy Cline while flipping through the November issue of Vogue in the comfort of my own home, as well as finally starting the book that won the Finlandia Prize last year. I guess things could be worse.

Päättäjäiset / Goodbye to summer

Rannoilla paloivat eilen tulet huvilakauden päättäjäisten kunniaksi. Käytiin äidin luona saunomassa, syötiin kuhaa ja juotiin viiniä. Katseltiin nopeasti nousevaa täysikuuta ja minä hätistelin hyttysiä. Pappa ja Chris hääräsivät veden rajassa ja saivat pienen kokon syttymään. Vesi on kylmennyt viikossa, pimeä tulee aina vain nopeammin. Vastarannalta kuului musiikkia, ihmisten hälinää, jossain järvellä surruutti vene menemään. Puhuttiin sadonkorjuusta.

Töitä on paljon.

Last night we celebrated the end of the summer cabin season with bonfires by the lakefront. We swam in the lake after sauna, we had pike-perch for dinner and enjoyed a glass or two of wine at my mother's house. The full moon rose quickly. Chris and Pappa made a fire, and I was trying to not get eaten alive by mosquitoes. The water is cold now and the nights are dark. On the opposite shore people were playing music, laughing. We talked about the harvest.

I haven't done much yard work this summer. In the spring I was too tired and depressed, in the early-to-mid-summer the weather was horrendous, and now... now doing garden work feels like giving into autumn. But it's no use postponing the inevitable: autumn comes. It's already here, in the wilting perennial beds, in the beans that must be picked now and not tomorrow. There's a lot to do. So today I got to work. I harvested the beans, pre-cooked them and froze them. I divided some perennials and planned to transfer others to different spots. Chris picked the slightly overgrown zucchinis from the veggie patch. I'll take the extra ones to my colleagues at work tomorrow.

I guess it's not so bad after all, that fall is upon us. It seems that nature is exhausted and it needs its rest. But for a little while longer: butterflies on the echinaceas, the sun still feels warm, the final moments of pink phlox in bloom.

Kesäpuutarha / Summer garden

Melkein kaikki tuntuu kukkivan, ukkostavan taivaan alla.

Feels like almost everything is in bloom, under a thundering sky.

Sota on jo hävitty.

-

This is the field that surrounds our yard. Yes, that's about a gazillion dandelion seeds, just waiting to land on our perennial beds and veggie garden. The war has already been lost. But aren't they pretty though, the fluffy little things, taking off to the wind, traveling to distant lands.

Pinkkiä / Pink

On vaaleanpunaisten kukkien aika: pikkusydänten, keijunkukkien, kaunokaisten ja pioniunikkojen (jotka saivat aika pahasti siipeensä kesäkuun puolivälin tuulisimpina päivinä - kukkia tuli kuitenkin muutama). Punapäivänkakkaroiden ja jaloakileijojen nuput aukeavat ihan näinä päivinä.

It's the season of pink flowers: of wild bleeding-hearts, coral bells, Bellis and peony poppies, who were almost wiped out during the windiest days of mid-June, but lo and behold! - a couple of flowers survived. The buds of the Pyrethrum daisies and Columbines are about to open any day now.

Tulppaaneja ja kellukoita / Tulips and avens

Last fall my neighbor Kirsti told me to not plant tulips - the moles will eat them anyway around here. I bought two small bags of bulbs anyway, just to try it out. And here we are! I love how the delicate red avens compliment the plump, purple and yellow blooming tulips.

Siperianunikko kukkii / The Siberian poppy in bloom

My Siberian poppies have started to bloom. A lot of people around here think of them as weeds and yank them out as soon as they can. Poppies spread in perennial beds like wildfire, but they don't really take up much room and they wilt fast. So I say: let them bloom! My Siberian poppies have bloomed this year in white, yellow and orange - for some reason these three colors are more common than the typical poppy-red.

Vihreitä (ja kukkivia) ihmeitä / Green (and blooming) wonders

Puutarhakausi on alkanut lupaavasti. Vaikka surenkin talven aikana kuollutta pioniani ja murehdin koleaa keliä, on pihalla monta ilon aihetta. Narsissit ja esikot kukkivat kauniisti, ruohosipuli, lipstikka, timjami ja oregano vihertävät. Pioniunikossa on jo nuppuja.

The gardening season is upon us. My peonies didn't survive the winter, the weather is really cold and dreary, but there are plenty of garden-related things to be happy about. Primulas and daffodils are blooming, my peony poppies are budding already. The herb garden looks promising.

Olin unohtanut istuttaneeni helmililjoja - pienet siniset tötteröt ovat jotenkin liikuttavia. Liljojakin pukkaa jo, mutten muista, minkälaisia. Olisivatkohan nämä ruskoliljoja?

I had forgotten that I had planted grape hyacinths last fall - the little blue cones are adorable. Lilies are pushing out of the ground, but I can't remember which type they are. Orange lilies, perhaps?

I bought perennials at a flea market for pennies. From left to right: rose campion, Stachys macrantha, pink phlox, Euphorbia epithymoides and some kind of member of the Primula family. I have no idea where to plant them, but of course, that's part of the fun.

Ah, kevät on ihanaa aikaa!

The buds of the Siberian poppies are so plump that I feel like squeezing them. (No worries, I won't.) Spring is awesome!

14. toukokuuta / May 14th

Maa on märkä sateen jäljiltä, tuoksuu hyvältä. Kuovit huutavat niin kovaa, että korviin sattuu. Maanomistaja korjaa ruokohelpiä. Ruoho vihertää viimein.

It looks like spring, but damn, it's cold outside. Today the temperature has hovered around 5-6 degrees celcius. The ground smells good, it has been raining for the last two days. The curlews' calls are so loud and sharp they hurt my ears. The landowner next door reaps creed canary grass. Our lawn is green again.

Puutarhapäivitys / Garden update

Perennapenkit ovat saaneet väriä sitten viime näkemän. Pienet narsissit aukesivat, suikeroesikot ovat kukkineet jo useamman päivän. Yksi rohkea julianesikko on jo avannut pari kukkaa, mutta sen kaverit pitävät nuppunsa visusti kiinni. Kevätesikkokin alkaa kukkia ehkä päivän-parin päästä, jos aurinko jatkaa näyttäytymistään.

My perennial beds are starting to show real signs of life, at least compared to a few weeks ago. The tiny daffodils opened their buds. My primroses started to bloom a few days back already, while the cowslips have kept their buds firmly unopened. The weather forecast hints at plenty of sun and reasonably warm days, which means - yay - more flowers!

I decided to try to grow gladioli this summer. I bought a few bags of bulbs at Lidl (of all places) and dug them into the ground.

Kevään merkkejä / Signs of spring

Kaksi kottaraista hengailee puhelinlangalla.

Two starlings have begun to build a nest in a bird house we have attached to the end of our barn, just like they did last year. They hang out on the old telephone wire from early morning to the late afternoon, chirping at one another. Every now and then they fly away for a little, then come back with a selection of building materials for their nest, and dive into the bird house. They return to the wire for another break, to continue their conversation.

The ice left the lake yesterday. One moment it was still there: the surface of the bay all gray and patchy, and a half an hour later it was gone, all gone. The sun shone on the newly-liberated waves, brightly like a ray of light on a mirror.

Our yard looks a little depressing this time of the year. There is no color, and the signs of life seem so minuscule. The daffodils and the primula are pushing from out of the ground slowly. I had forgot that I had planted croci last fall, but I must have, since there they are, tiny green stubs emerging from the dirt. It looks like the winter has been mostly kind to the garden. Except that the hares ate my hydrangeas, the little bastards.

Puutarhuri intoilee / The gardener enthuses

Spring is barely here, but there are some signs of it in my garden already. The tulips, the daffodils and the sundrops are pushing up through the ground. It's going to be quite a while before we see anything resembling actual plants or flowers, but boy, this gardener is happy nevertheless.

Puutarhakausi korkattu! / The Gardening Season Begins!

Näin on puutarhakausi korkattu. Lueskelin aamiaisella viime viikolla postissa saapunutta taimikuvastoa. No, onnellisia yllätyksiä sitten, parin kuukauden päästä.

I got my pelargoniums out of the basement, finally. And what a sight it was: all eight of them were sprouting like mad, two of them were pushing flowers, the crazy buggers. In a nutshell: they all survived the winter. This has been my first time overwintering pelargoniums, so I had no idea what to do. I googled cutting instructions, watched some YouTube videos, and tried to remember what our neighborhood's gardening wizard Sirkka had told me a few weeks back. I went with Sirkka's advice, because it was the simplest: "Just cut them. Cut them, cut them all over. A plant either lives or dies." So I started cutting: a snip here, a snip there, and then a lot of snips everywhere.

And here we are: the gardening season has begun. At breakfast I browsed through a plant catalog that had arrived in the mail earlier this week and developed a small obsession with ordering speedwells, lilies ('Chocolate Canary' looks awesome) and globe thistles. I can't remember half of the perennials I divided and/or planted last fall. Well, there will be plenty of happy surprises, I am sure, in a few months time.

Sula / The melt

Lumi on sulanut tällä viikolla silmissä. Ilma on märkää, raskasta, hapekasta. Odotellaan, odotellaan.

- - -

It's probably way too early to declare winter to be over, but looking outside, you'd have no way of knowing it was February. The snow has been melting fast this week. The ice on the lake is still thick, but water and slush that rest on the surface make the lake look perilous. The air is wet, heavy and full of oxygen. Glimpses of grass, our driveway and the neighbor's fields can be seen poking out through the snow, but the scent of spring is still missing. We'll wait, we'll wait.

Jälkiä lumessa / Tracks in the snow

Iltapäivän aurinko paistaa matalalla, hädin tuskin horisontin yllä. Jäljet lumessa kertovat vierailijoista pihalla: fasaaneista, jäniksistä, naapurin kissoista, varpusista.

The late afternoon sun hangs barely over the horizon. There are tracks on the snow, we have had visitors: pheasants, hares, sparrows, the neighbor's cat.

Huurteessa / Frosty

Lauantaiaamuna maailma oli valkoinen. Kaikki huurteessa, jokaista ruohonkortta myöden.

Everything was white on Saturday morning. Every single straw, covered in hoarfrost.

Vihreitä / Greens

Takapihalla siintää järvi. Se hohtaa hopeisena, tuulee. Helpi kahisee.

---

The lake shines in silver, we can see it from our backyard. It's windy again. The hay sways and rustles in the breeze. The lilac leaves turn yellow. I picked the rest of the green tomatoes today. There's no point to keep them in the greenhouse; it's not warm enough for them to ripen.
