Hey, whaddayaknow, it's a blog post!

Kirjoittaminen on käynyt työlääksi. Käynpä katsomassa instafeediä. Olisko jotain uutta telkkarisarjaa?

Houkutuksia on valtavasti, päivittäin.

Millaista sitten on second hand -yrittäjyys - no, aika ihanaa.

I am not a huge fan of "end of the year"- recaps on blogs, but as it happens, I have a moment to type up a few words. Not that I am going to write up a recap on 2017, because I just don't have the patience. I don't really have the patience for blogging these days - I more or less just post the occasional picture on Instagram and that's about it. It seems that almost all blogs that I used to follow are no longer active. Some have grown commercial, others have drastically changed in content, but mostly people just don't post much. And when others don't write, I haven't either. I have also felt that I don't have a whole lot of say about anything, and even if I do for a split second, all it takes is a few moments for me to realize that I have gotten too lazy to formulate arguments. I suffer from the internet brain. Or whatever it is called - you know, I no longer have the attention spam to focus on a topic, any topic. Oh, let me look at my Instagram feed for a second. Hmm, maybe there's a new TV show I don't know about. Anything going on in my Facebook groups? I don't know if I need a break from the internet, or just from social media. I miss writing, I miss having a slower mind. I also feel like I have lost two thirds of my English vocabulary.

I have often written a post about my clothing-related spending at the end of each year. I have been listing my clothing purchases for years, except that this year I stopped half-way through. I guess I just forgot? What I know is that I have bought a lot of clothes this year, and I have failed to buy that one thing that I really needed: practical black winter lace-up ankle boots, to replace the ones that I wore until they broke. I guess I haven't had the need for new ones, really - we have no snow in southern Finland and the temperatures hover at above freezing (see: pictures in this post, taken today). I miss proper winters. I wish we had some snow. But anywhoo, so I haven't bought winter boots, but I have bought plenty of other clothes. Working with second hand clothes means that temptation abounds. There are way too many amazing clothes in this world, and even if I can't own them all, it appears that I can own quite many, without breaking the bank. I have never enjoyed my wardrobe as much as I do now.

By the way, it is wonderful to wear what one wants to work. I finally have that kind of life. It's awesome. It is also awesome to no longer work in regular clothing retail. Ugh, now that some time has passed, I find it impossible that I'd ever want to buy new clothes again, or god forbid, go to clothing sales.  It also seems totally crazy that the clothing industry is not regulated more than it is. There is so much wrong with everything, from manufacturing to retail, that it is really not funny. I think it would benefit many people to have to work in clothing retail for some time. It's hard to not change one's perspective on clothing when one is surrounded by the madness of clothing retail.

So how does it feel then, working with second hand clothing? Well, it's very nice. There is a lot of work and not a whole lot of free time or money. But the work is rewarding. It's fun. I wouldn't change it for the world. On other fronts, life is good, too. The cats are well, Chris is well (except that he needs to get his astigmatism fixed). Everything that is important is well. What more could one ask for? (Maybe, that properly functioning pre-social media brain?)

I can't promise that I'll be posting more from now on. Maybe I will, maybe I won't. We shall see. Like I mentioned earlier, I miss writing and I miss having my wits. Perhaps I will make time for occasional ramblings. In case someone, anyone is reading this, how are things in your neck of the woods? I have missed you!

Oh, look, it's an old-fashioned outfit picture - how very 2010 of me!

On tullut tehtyä aika paljon töitä lähiaikoina!

Syksy on melkein täällä.

It has been over two months since I wrote my previous blog post. A lot has happened: I quit my old job (like I was set to do in late June), and then I made a dream come true. I started my own second hand business and I now share a shop with my sister and another entrepreneur. In the last two months I have worked a lot. The shop is open eight hours a day, five days a week, plus then there is a lot of work that has to be done outside the opening hours: there is always paperwork, and there is always clothes to be ironed or mended, if nothing else. I couldn't have done any of this without Chris' support: he's been taking care of our household and our cats while I've been either minding the shop or re-sewing buttons while sitting on the sofa at night. I have been incredibly tired but incredibly happy. I still find it hard to believe that I am actually doing what I have always wanted to do. I have to remind myself that there is no one else bossing me around except for my self and my Lutheran work ethic. It's been quite a whirlwind, and I still have a lot to learn.

Autumn is here. I have tried to resist it by not wearing socks one day, or by not wrapping up a scarf around my neck on another, which is probably why I caught a cold two weeks back. (I am all better now though.) I guess there is no way around the fact that this short, sweet Finnish summer is almost over. I say 'almost', because today was warm and sunny. The forest smells of decaying leaves and mushrooms, the ground is moist, the moss drenched and greener than ever. The sun warms up the bedrock, one can still hear the grasshoppers.

Sata vihreää / A hundred greens

Summer is finally here, and as usual, I find myself unable to wear full-on summer clothes. I am always too concerned about sunburn, and revealing my white-as-chalk legs feels like it's just too much to handle. For three years in a row now, my first summer outfit has consisted of a pair of loosely fitting black trousers and a stripy silk knit. It's my go-to get-up for this lovely time of the year.

Hundreds of shades of green are all bursting out at once. The nightingales have arrived, and their song cascades, almost violently, through the night that is almost as light as day.

Valkovuokkoaika / Wood anemone time

Aika tuntuu odottavalta, päivät sulautuvat toinen toisiinsa. Olen käynyt töissä, ollut kotona, kirppistellyt, lukenut muotilehtiä, kuunnellut jazzia, syönyt tankoparsaa. Ihan perussettiä. Ajatellut en ole juurikaan, enkä lukenut kirjoja, enkä haastanut mieltäni millään tavalla. Kaikki on ihan hyvin, mikäs tässä ollessa. Joskus on hyvä antaa aivojen lepäillä.

Dare I say that winter might be over? The weather gods have not been kind to Finland this spring, and it is supposed to get cold again next week (we might even get some snow on Wednesday) but today, I will allow myself to think that spring is truly here, as is this ocean of wood anemones in our nearby woods. I love this time of spring: the signs of life are delicate, but the change of season is in the air. The light hits the forest floor, the green pushes through the gray, slowly.

I haven't written much lately, because I just haven't felt like it and there is simply not much going on in life. I've been at work, I've spent time at home, I've gone to flea markets and charity shops, I've read fashion magazines, listened to jazz, and I've eaten a lot of asparagus. Pretty basic stuff, really. I haven't read books, I haven't felt like challenging my mind, I haven't thought much of anything. Everything is good though. Sometimes it's not a bad thing to let one's brain rest.

Here is Chris, making fun of me posing for my outfit shots:

I am wearing all second hand (and my new Mamaha turban - made of recycled fabrics).

Äänestyspäivänä / On Voting Day

Joskus pinnalla on helpompi hengittää.

It's the municipal election time in Finland, and Chris and I trekked to our local pre-voting place to cast our votes: me for what feels like a hundredth time, but Chris got to vote in Finland for the first time ever. We voted, then bought me a new yoga mat (my old one went missing) and for Chris, a new desk lamp. We wandered through the aisles of a hypermarket where a bunch of asparagus was much cheaper (2,98 euros) than at our nearby grocery store (6,99 euros). We bought the affordable asparagus and splurged on a big chunk of flame-grilled salmon. On our way home we talked about our eating habits and recognized, like we've done before, that we eat too much sugar. I recently read a scary article about the dangers of sugar and felt a sting in my heart. I eat candy almost every day, and it is not good for me. We decided to do better. At home we brewed some green tea and I felt healthier already. We have no chocolate or cookies in the house. I am scared, because I have a bad feeling that come tonight, I'll be bouncing off the walls with my sugar cravings. I am not sure the flame-grilled salmon will satisfy me at that point. I put my hopes on asparagus, and perhaps, popcorn.

My voting outfit is all second hand: I bought the cute wool-cashmere cardigan for 3 euros at a flea market not so long ago. The green, fuzzy leopard print skirt is an oldie: I bought it at another flea market years and years ago. I remember trying to get the seller to sell it for less - the skirt had a seam that had come undone a little bit - but she stuck to her guns and I eventually paid her the ten euros she wanted for the skirt. I don't haggle at flea markets anymore. I feel like good quality clothes are being sold for such low prices that I just don't have it in me to haggle.

The sun began to shine only later in the afternoon. The light brutally penetrated our apartment and pinpointed our dirty windows and dusty corners, even though I just vacuumed a few days ago. I tried to read a book but couldn't concentrate. I find that my mind is focused on very practical things these days: a cat's wet nose, a ray of sun casting light on an oriental rug, do we have milk so that I can make mashed potatoes later. I don't feel particularly deep these days. Perhaps it's easier to breathe on the surface.

Typically, in late April or May I find myself trudging along in a pair of ice-and-gravel-beaten winter boots and a cat-hair-covered wool coat, even when the weather would allow, say, a denim jacket and brogues. I decided to do things differently this year: I hopped on the spring wear wagon much earlier than usual. I bought this green padded trench coat at Frida marina some time ago, and it has been such a good purchase. It is wind resistant and the padded lining keeps me warm when temperatures still hover around freezing. The added bonus: it looks so much lighter and springier than any of my wool coats. For years I thought that I wasn't really a trench coat person, but I guess all it took was the right length and a suitable amount of volume.

Also, I declare: spring is here! Blackbirds sing and it is light out when I get off work from the late shift. In the suburbs it smells of dirt, wonderful dirt, and the streams and brooks flow free of ice. I feel like cleaning and cooking (asparagus season is almost upon us), and wandering in the bare, colorless woods.

Aurinko! / The sun!

Hauska tikkipusakka on Globe Hopen - loistava kirpparilöytö viime kesältä. Pipo, huivi, laukku, lapaset ja kengät second handiä.

Look at me, I am outdoors!

It almost felt and seemed like spring on Friday, so Chris and I ventured out onto the perilously icy walking paths. We didn't fall or break our bones, but received a nice dose of sunlight instead. The sun is actually making me think that life is once again possible - the darkest months of the year are behind us and the days feel noticeably longer already. At home I enjoyed a hot cup of Sergejeff tea and ate the last piece of the banana bread I had made a few days earlier. (I really, really love banana bread. In case anyone is interested, the recipe I used is at the end of the post.) Later in the evening I suffered the consequences of having enjoyed too much bright light: I developed a horrible migraine, and another one the day after. I am trying to tell myself that it was worth it!

Not much else to report - I am wearing a cheap H&M cashmere sweater (which is actually of pretty good quality - I have worn it a lot in the 3 or 4 years I've had it) and thrifted Noa Noa wool sailor trousers. The jacket is a fleamarket find from last summer - it is by Globe Hope, a Finnish brand that makes clothes and accessories out of recycled fabrics. The knit hat, scarf, mittens, bag and shoes are all second hand.

The Banana Bread recipe (not my own, I found it here)

Mix the ingredients below in a big bowl and stir into a soft batter with a wooden spoon. No need to mix or whisk anything separately - just dump everything into the bowl at once and stir gently!

2 eggs
2½ dl sugar
2 ripe medium-sized bananas, mushed
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons vanilla sugar
8 tablespoons whipping cream (or any form of cream-like dairy; I used cooking cream but you can also use regular milk or yogurt)
150 g butter, melted
2½ dl flour
dash of cinnamon
(I also added a handful of chopped dates)

Lightly coat a greased cake/bread pan with breadcrumbs, pour in the batter and bake in 200 degrees for about an hour. Cover the pan with kitchen foil for the last 20 minutes of baking time to prevent the surface from burning. Put in a cool place. The bread is at its best (nicely sweet, dense and sticky) a day or two later.

Ajankatoamiskompleksi / Disappearance of time -complex

Mihin aika katoaa?

Where does the time go?

We are two weeks into the new year, which has felt like a brief moment. I don't have any excuses - I haven't even been busy. On our 7th wedding anniversary (yes, it's been 7 years since we got married!) Chris and I stripped down our Christmas tree, and apart from that, we have just been hibernating and fleamarketing, and gone to the movies. (Our sci-fi -theme continues: we've seen Star Wars: Rogue One and Passengers, of which the former was good and the latter very average.) I've practiced my embroidery on an old linen pillow case, I've thought about growing my hair out, and planned to do yoga again in order to ease my back pains. I've also thought about how intensely I always plan things and not do anything about them - I think, rather than do. Maybe I have trouble living in the moment, which is one reason for why I've steered away from Instagram a fair bit lately. On the bus or on the train I don't take my phone out unless I have to. I try to be, fashionably, 'present' a little more.

When clothing is concerned, I am currently fascinated by 1980s loose fit, dropped waist dresses. It's such a horrible look that it's intriguing, don't you think? I've found myself looking at these types of dresses at flea markets for some time now, and I've even tried on a few. This army green wool dress by Finnish designer Vuokko Nurmesniemi I brought all the way home. What do you say - does it hurt your eyes? (The awesome lace-up boots are from this lovely lady's flea market stall - I had been looking for a pair like this for a long time.)

Kerran pyhäinpäivänä / Once on All Hallows' Eve

Porukan kokoonpano vaihtui aina silloin tällöin illan aikana.

My sister hosted an All Hallows' Eve dinner party on Saturday, with a Victorian / Russian theme. What a nice night it was: good food, excellent company, lots of talking. People came and went, but Chris and I stayed from start to finish. With hosts as lovely as these two below, there was no way we would have left early.

(In this one, Chris wears a tea cozy.)

Theme-appropriately, I dressed as a woman with consumption. (Chris wore dark eye shadow to look equally pale and sickly - what a gentleman!) I felt oddly comfortable in my look. I'm seriously considering growing out my bangs now. Perhaps I should wear eye make-up every now and then, too?
