Kun saapuu syys / The falling leaves

On kuulkaa jo lokakuun ensimmäinen.

On ruusunmarjateetä, Netflixissä kaksi kautta Penny Dreadful'ia, kehräävä kissa sylissä, ja Bill Evans Trion maailman paras versio Kuolleista lehdistä (löytyypi postauksen lopusta).

It's hard to believe it's October 1st already. The sun sets earlier and earlier every day. It has been a stunning autumn in our neck of the woods: sunny, bright and warm, but it's getting trickier to get dressed. One needs gloves and a warm scarf in the mornings, but the days are still pleasant enough where wool tights would be a total overkill. Then the sun sets, as does the chill. It's a beautiful, complicated time of year.

I bought a pair of dark red ankle boots from my friend's flea market stall a few weeks back. I have worn them almost every day, kicking fallen maple leaves, acorns and chestnuts gently as I walk to the train station.

Isn't it so, that there is always something in life: some kind of a worry or a problem, whether it's real or imagined. Autumn months tend to be difficult for me personally, with the loss of daylight in particular, and whatever worries there may be, the burden always feels heavier when summer is no longer with us. But this year I feel much more optimistic about fall than usual: there is rosehip tea, two seasons of Penny Dreadful on Netflix, a purring kitty or three, and the best ever version of Autumn Leaves, courtesy of Bill Evans Trio. The track sounds like my autumn feels: bubbly, airy, lively.

All That Jazz

Yläasteikäisenä saavuin toisinaan kotiin ennen kaikkia muita perheenjäseniä. Huhuilin ovelta, kukaan ei vastannut. Olin yksin kotona. Hiivin levysoittimelle, kaivoin esille hyllystä isäpuolen Shelly Manne & His Men at the Black Hawk-vinyylin tai Oscar Peterson Trion Another Day:n. Kuuntelin jazzia jokseenkin salaa, koska kaverit luukuttivat poprockhittejä ja fanittivat poikabändejä, kuten asiaan olisi eittämättä kuulunut. Sitten unohdin jazzin ja tilalle tulivat grunge ja 90-luvun puolivälin brittibändi-invaasio.

Viime vuosituhannen vaihteessa näin The Talented Mr Ripley-elokuvan, jossa Matt Damonin esittämä Tom Ripley tutustuu jazziin tehdäkseen vaikutuksen Jude Lawn roolihahmoon, Charlie Parkeria intohimoisesti fanittavaan Dickieen. Yökerhossa Tom laulaa My Funny Valentinen.

When I was in my early teens, I was often the first one home from school. I'd holler from the door, no one answered, which meant that I was home alone. I snuck up to the record player, got out my stepdad's vinyls: Shelly Manne & His Men at the Black Hawk, or Oscar Peterson Trio's Another Day. My jazz fandom was somewhat of a secret, because all of my friends were listening to the pop/rock hits or the boy bands of that era, as teenagers were more or less supposed to do. Eventually I forgot about jazz when grunge and the mid-1990s Brit band invasion came along.

Somewhere in the turn of the millennium I saw The Talented Mr Ripley, where Tom Ripley, played by Matt Damon, learns to know jazz in order to impress and intrude into the life of Jude Law's character, Charlie Parker-loving Dickie. In a smoky nightclub Tom sings My Funny Valentine. It started from there - my clumsy, slow return to the world of jazz. I don't claim to understand anything about the technicalities of jazz, nor do I consider myself a particularly musical person. I approach jazz with childlike curiosity and wonder, and these days I listen to anything from ragtime to swing, from commercial big band music to bebop, anything from the East Coast to the West Coast, from Brazilian bossa nova all the way to current Finnish jazz. (The only stuff I try to avoid is hardcore fusion, because I find it simply unpleasant.) Recently I've been listening to good old Duke Ellington, Chick Webb and Benny Goodman. I recommend whole-heartedly!

Hyvää / Merry

Hyvää joulunaikaa kaikille, ja rauhaa päälle maan. Seuraavaksi Eric Cartman laulaa O Holy Night'in.

Merry Christmas, happy holidays, and peace on earth. Also, Eric Cartman sings O Holy Night.

Hyviä aikoja / Good times

Viimeiset ties kuinka monta vuotta olen nyrpistellyt nenääni Flow Festivalille (jos joku on yksimielisesti suosittua ja suotavaa, siinä on oltava jotain vikaa), mutten enää. Vietin kaksi hienoa päivää Suvilahdessa siskon kanssa ja liityn kokemuksen perusteella Flow-fanien joukkoon iloiseen. Flow on kaikin puolin kiva festari: kaunis miljöö, hyvät esiintyjät, leppoinen fiilis, erinomainen ruoka, tarpeeksi vessoja, ei liiallista kaljaörinää.

Parasta: saippuakuplia puhaltelevat, kauniisti pukeutuneet tytöt ja pojat, hieman harmaantunut mutta hurmaava Belle and Sebastianin keulahahmo Stuart Murdoch, Timo Lassyn ilta-auringossa hymyillen jammaileva jazzbändi, maistuvat hodarit, Pet Shop Boysin elektrinen valoshow hittiputkineen, yleisön seassa meistä parin metrin päässä autuaasti Beckin tahtiin tanssiva Florence Welch, jolla oli vähän liian pienet puukengät muttei yhtään meikkiä. Lämpimät, pimenevät illat, yleisön rauhallinen vaellus pois festarialueelta yöllä. Ensin kaikki kävelemme samaan suuntaan, mutta liikennevaloissa erkanemme.

I spent the weekend at Flow Festival in Helsinki with my sister. I've been suspicious of Flow for some time, because everyone seems to love it unconditionally - hence there must be something wrong with it. Take it from me though: Flow is just as lovely as they say. There's plenty of good music to choose from, a beautiful setting with gorgeous lights and intricate details, happy people, awesome food. I am a convert.

This is Flow: pretty girls and boys casually blowing soap bubbles into the air, charming Stuart Murdoch of Belle and Sebastian talking to his audience about the Helsinki tram network, stunningly energetic jazz in the early evening sunshine by Timo Lassy and his band, tasty hot dogs, an electric show from the Pet Shop Boys. When Beck was playing on the main stage on Sunday, Florence Welch of Florence + The Machine came out to dance just a few feet away from us, wearing clogs a little too small, and not an ounce of make-up. Late at night the people walked away from the festival area in herds of ecstatic sheep, all strolling slowly but surely in the same direction, before finally going their separate ways at the traffic lights.

Taikaa / Magic

Päässäni on pyörinyt jo monta päivää The Bee Geesin I Started a Joke. Robinin laulusuorituksessa on jotain taianomaista.

---

I have had an earworm for days: The Bee Gees' I Started a Joke. There's something truly magical about Robin's vocals.

Tervetuloa joulu / Welcome, Christmas

Joulu on jo täällä. Tuvassa könöttää vähän turhan harvaoksinen, mutta sopivan överisti koristeltu joulukuusi. Hain tänään kaupasta Budapest-suklaata ja Vihreitä kuulia. Kiikutin naapureiden postilaatikoihin joulutervehdyksiä, väsäsin ylijäämähavuista pihalle koristeita. Tuvassa soi kirpparilta bongattu Dorothy Lamourin rahiseva vinyyli vuodelta 1957.

Christmas is here! Our Christmas tree is somewhat sparse, but it is covered in glamorous, kitsch-y ornaments, just like we like it. I stocked up on my favorite Christmas candies today, wrote last-minute season's greetings to our neighbors, and used some leftover pine branches to make garden decorations. A Dorothy Lamour lp from 1957 is the perfect soundtrack for a day like today.

Viikon kirpparilöytö / The flea market find of the week

Olen tottunut siihen, etten yleensä löydä täkäläisiltä kirppareilta mieleistäni musiikkia: Popeda ja Vera Telenius eivät nappaa. Mutta joskus Etelä-Pohjanmaa yllättää. Törmäsin sunnuntaina todelliseen löytöön: joku oli päättänyt luopua 1970-luvun lopun funk-, soul- ja r&b-kokoelmastaan. Hintaa LP-levyillä oli euron kappale. Kaamosta ei voi tehokkaammin selättää kuin kuuntelemalla vinyyliltä New Birthiä, General Jacksonia ja The Temptationsia.

What a score! I found a big pile of LPs at the flea market, all late 1970s r&b, funk and soul, for one euro each. If the sounds of New Birth, General Jackson and The Temptations on vinyl don't make me smile in the midst of November darkness, I don't know what will...

Elämä hymyilee / Life is good

Pimeys on tipotiessään: meillä on lunta!

Bye bye, darkness, we have snow! We had blue skies all day yesterday. I swung by a vacant school where they were clearing their old teaching materials. Bought some pretty books, xylophone jazz and awesome, ancient teaching charts for mere pennies. It was a good day.

Ensi kuussa / Next month

I've never really liked the term girl crush. But if it has to be used, I have two: the first is Tilda Swinton, the second is Annie Clark. They both have inexplicable energy and courage to be different. I was a little shocked to notice that there were still tickets available for St. Vincent's Helsinki concert next month. I immediately grabbed two for myself and my sister
