Varjoja odotellessa / Waiting for the shadows

On vaikeaa löytää motivaatiota oikein mihinkään.

It's been cold and snowy here. Yesterday Chris and I walked a lot. It was a rare, beautiful, crisp and sunny November day that felt more like late January or early February, with the snow crunching under our feet and all.

I woke up on Wednesday morning when it was still dark, to the sudden realization that Chris hadn't come to bed at all. Startled, I staggered into the living room, almost half asleep, and saw Chris sitting on the sofa, staring at the TV with a desperate, glazed look in his eyes. I didn't even have to ask, but did anyway. Florida had been called not too long ago, so that was the end of that. I spent most of the day in an incoherent haze, walking through the snowy streets of Helsinki, forcing myself to be on the move. Motion seemed to help a little.

For weeks I have been expecting my seasonal affective disorder to set in. For some time now, I have woken up tired every morning, feeling like no amount of sleep helps. I have had to really push myself to do something, or anything. On Wednesday, after the election results came in, I blamed myself for having been so stupid: I had thought that perhaps I could avoid it all this year, that I'd just feel a little off for a few months. "But now, there's no way," I thought, "so bring it on, I can get through it somehow." And yet, here I am today, still waiting. The darkness hasn't swept me up. I'm getting by. It might take me longer to get out of bed in the mornings than usual, and I might be angry at the world, but none of it feels overwhelming. I am okay, and for that, thankful.

Sunnuntai / Sunday

It's a lazy Sunday, and I am airing out some of my wool clothes on the balcony. That's all I'm good for today! I went out for dinner with my colleagues last night, and it seems that two glasses of wine is enough for me to suffer from a slight headache and overall tiredness the day after. I feel like snoozing like a cat, flipping through fashion magazines, watching TV half-awake.

Guess what - I had the opportunity to sign up for a free stylist's consultation through work. Curious as I am, I went for it. The stylist will pick out clothes for me on the basis of two photos and a filled out form where I've attempted to describe my style and my likes and dislikes when it comes to clothing. I am intrigued and can't wait - I wonder what types of clothes the stylist will choose for me, and how different they may be from how I dress myself. The styling takes place in ten days - and believe me, I will write all about it!

Karhupuiston kulmilla / Bear Park corner

I took the train to Helsinki for a job interview, arriving late Thursday night. A plate of food, a pot of rosehip tea and some excellent company waited for me at my sister's. Friday's interview went okay, I think - the end result remains to be seen though. After the interview I needed to shake off my nerves, so I walked and walked in the cold January weather, snow crunching under my feet as I passed car after car buried in snow by the sidewalk. I ended up in Kaivopuisto by the sea, gazed at the horizon for a little, and went to a flea market where I bought an Indonesian necklace and Egyptian prayer beads. (Yes, I am painfully aware of the fact that I just admitted to having bought more jewelry, once again.) I stopped by at Akateeminen, my favorite Helsinki book store, as I always do, and I enjoyed the buzz of people around me, as I always do, too.

On Saturday early afternoon, Bear Park in Kallio was quiet and the breeze felt colder than the day before. Sunlight doesn't feel warm this time of year, but it didn't matter: I wore my shearling coat, a chunky hat, wool tights and a burning desire for life in my heart. Earlier during my trip I had received a text message: "what are you taking with you from this very moment?" I knew the answer now: I would take the city, all of it, and the awareness of the fact that I would be a part of this once again - if not tomorrow, then soon.

Matkaavat korut / Traveling jewels

Smaragdinvihreä ja vintage-opaalisormukset kiinnostavat, nyt ja aina. Hopeinen rannekoru yllä on Istanbulin Grand Bazaarista. Alla vasemmalla 1950-luvun opaalisormus vintagekaupasta Endicottista New Yorkista ja oikeanpuolimmainen viktoriaanisen ajan safiirikoristeltu opaalisormus Portobello Road Marketilta Lontoosta.

Currently (and always) digging: emerald green and vintage opal rings. The silver bracelet above is from the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul. Below, the 1950s opal ring on the left is from a vintage shop in Endicott, New York. The sapphire decorated, Victorian opal ring, on the right, is from Portobello Road Market in London.
