Elämäpäivitys / Life update

"no mä käytän tätä toppia luultavasti vain kerran",

(Korjaus: Chris on maalannut pari seinää.)

Olen katsonut Muodin huipulle:a ja Westworldia. Olen lukenut pari Tove Janssonin novellia, mutta mitään pidempää kaunokirjallisuuden tuotosta en juuri nyt jaksa. Sen sijaan olen plärännyt nettikauppoja kesäkenkien toivossa, kun jo viime kesänä rikki menneet kesäläpyskäni eivät kertakaikkiaan enää pelitä. Löysin yhden kaupan miesten valikoimasta parit lupaavat kengät ja heinäkuun ensimmäisellä viikolla pitäisi selvitä, onko kenkien ostaminen nettikaupasta sulaa hulluutta. On varmaankin. Harmittaa, etten juuri koskaan löydä hyviä second hand- kenkiä.

Ensi viikko on viimeinen työviikkoni tavaratalossa.

No, siispä menin töihin enkä Suomenlinnaan.

This past spring, during Fashion Revolution time, I planned to write about the sad state of the clothing industry, for the umpteenth time. In fact, I wrote a post, I just never published it. Here is what I wrote:

"It's the same old story, year after year: the pace of fashion is too fast, the production of clothes is not transparent, garment workers are forced to work for sub-par wages and in horrid conditions, and people keep consuming like there is no tomorrow. My current job in clothing retail keeps reminding me of just how hopeless it all really is. I'd like to be the type of person who'd always have hope, who'd believe that things will get better, but with the clothing industry... it's too hard when the reality of things stares at you in the face every day. Even the expensive clothes are mostly horrible and cheaply made. Nothing is made to last, and this is where I lose hope: the average consumer doesn't care about any of it. In the hipster bubble people put emphasis on quality and they are interested in making ethical choices, but the masses just don't care at all. They will keep buying cheap clothes because they are cheap.

My customers will say things like

"oh well, I will wash this dress in 40 degrees and if it shrinks, I will just throw it away",
or
"if this 100 euro pair of jeans lasts for six months, I'll be happy",
or
"my budget for everyday pair of trousers is 35 euros, and I expect quality for that",
or
"well, I think I might just wear this top this one time anyway",
or
"now that I have found this new coat, here, take my old one and throw it in the garbage".

Like I said, sometimes it's just too hard to believe that things will turn around. The people who work with and for Fashion Revolution are doing something really important, and I admire them. I wish I had their passion, their resolve, and their faith!

I've been back working in clothing retail for a little over a year now, and I've worked in clothing retail before. I've seen a lot of different sides to it: I've done basic customer service and sales, I've done buying, I've done storage work, merchandising, customer styling, and marketing, too. In some ways it has been wonderful: I still love fashion, after all this time, and especially during this last year or so, just being able to be back in Helsinki has lifted my spirits on the whole. In other ways, it has not been so wonderful: it is discouraging to be a part of the system that is profoundly unethical and thoroughly consumerist, and the quality of clothing keeps plummeting, even when there are times one thinks that it couldn't possibly get any worse. I will write this up now, mostly for myself, and I guess also for my handful of readers, those of you who know what I'd really want to do for a living: I will not be working in clothing retail for long. Not like this. I am in the process of starting my own business. It will be vintage, good quality second hand, and it will be interesting, beautiful and sustainable. It is long overdue like many of you know, as it is something that I have planned for years, but for this thing or that, nothing has yet materialized. But I am close now, closer than I've ever been. It will happen soon. There, I said it! And just like that, there is hope, after all."

After I wrote the post, I just couldn't bring myself to publish it. I got scared, and I didn't want to jinx my plans. But there it is now, anyway.

The past couple of weeks have been somewhat of a whirlwind. I've written and re-written a business plan, I've gone to talk to a business adviser about it. I've juggled numbers, I've gone back to square one many times. I've tried to figure out how little money I could live on. I'm currently in the process of applying for a start-up grant. I've acquired a decent amount of vintage clothes for my business in the last six months or so, and I now look at what I've accumulated and think: I could start with these. I've looked for clothing racks and suitable hangers for the shop, I've arranged a space for my merchandise with a lot of help from my sister, and I've chosen paint colors. Heck, I've already painted walls. (Actually, Chris has done most of the painting.) I've spent hours browsing dictionaries, poems, mythologies and random flora/fauna books in a pursuit to find a name for my business. It now has one... maybe.

And then I've done nothing at all, except finished a shift here and a shift there at the department store, I've bought groceries after work, come home, watched a lot of TV. I first had mixed feelings about the Twin Peaks revival, but the show has surpassed all expectations. Lynch has won me over. I've watched the final season of Penny Dreadful (which was, yes, rather dreadful), I've watched Project Runway and Westworld. I've read a couple of short stories by Tove Jansson, but I can't seem to find enough of an attention span to tackle anything more substantial. Instead, I've looked to replace my favorite summer shoes that have fallen apart and I found something interesting in one online shop's men's section, and I'll have to wait until the first week of July to see if it's sheer madness to order shoes online. It probably is. I wish I could find cool shoes second hand, but I just don't have much luck.

Next week is my last week at the department store. I quit my job a week ago, but promised my boss that I'd work for a week longer than my 14 days' notice. It has felt strange, going in, trying to at least pretend to feel motivated to sell new clothes. I've been even more direct with my customers than usual: I've been known to discourage customers from buying stuff they don't need, but today I even told a handful of customers to be suspicious of merino wool sweaters that retail for 35 euros: can you expect quality? How was it manufactured? (They bought the sweaters anyway, but at least it wasn't because of me.) Customers aren't used to sales staff being honest, and they look at me, perplexed, as if I'm an alien - I no longer belong in that environment and it is becoming clearer every day. Or maybe it's not them that are perplexed - maybe it's me. What I am still doing here?

Today has been warm and sunny. I had planned a day trip to the sea fortress Suomenlinna, but I had forgot that I had to go to work. No seaside for me then, I trekked to work instead. On my way home from the bus stop I could still smell the midsummer roses whose scent lingers in the air, even though they have started to wilt. All in all, the world looks green and bright.

Elokuun loppu / End of August

Kuten pari viikkoa sitten uhkailin, aloitin Infinite Jestin lukemisen.

Aamulla pihanurmi on kasteesta märkä, kurjet huutavat jossain. Korjatulla helpipellolla parveilee töyhtöhyyppälauma, joka kiekuu pitkälle yöhön.

I've clung to the recent heatwave like to dear life. On the hottest day of the two-three-week stretch of beautiful, sunny, warm days I walked into the lake thigh-deep and watched dragonflies sunbathe on wilting lily pads. I listened to water striders make astonishing clittering sounds on the water and I felt dead leaves under my feet on the bottom of the lake. Then I swam. The water on the surface was still warm and clear then, but it's getting murkier by the day now. I'm not quite ready to welcome autumn. Today is cloudy and rainy, they say summer is all over. The sun sets at 9 pm, and the nights are dark as coal. The cats have begun visiting the top of our large heating oven, just to check if it's warm already, even though it has probably been close to 75 degrees in the house.

I started to read Infinite Jest a while back, but my progress has been very slow. On some days when I'm not quite up to the intellectual challenge (IJ is a tricky read for a non-native speaker), Chris reads Stephen King's The Shining to me. Chris is a great reader-out-loud. He never stumbles on odd words or phrases, and never misses the proper intonation. On other days we watch the 1960s TV-classic The Prisoner. On my way to work and on the way back home I listen to Johnny Cash, really loud.

In the mornings the grass is soaking wet from the mist. Cranes cry in the distance. A flock of lapwings has begun to swarm on the field. Their odd shrieks carry long into the night.

The truth is out there

Aloitin juuri Donna Tartt'n Tiklin. Jäin koukkuun, jo ensimmäiseltä sivulta. David Hughes'n The Greatest Sci-fi Movies Never Made on seuraavana lukulistalla.

Lukemistani häiritsee Salaiset kansiot. Minä ja Chris päätimme katsoa koko sarjan läpi, alusta loppuun. Iltamme sujuvat pääsääntöisesti näin: "Katsotaanko yksi jakso Salaisia kansioita?" "Joo." "Katsotaanko vielä yksi?" "Joo." "Vielä ehdittäisiin kolmaskin." "Anna mennä." Varoitus niille, jotka harkitsevat aloittavansa saman urakan: ensimmäinen tuotantokausi on aika kamala, ja joidenkin jaksojen katsominen on yhtä tuskaa. Mutta mikä parasta: Mulder on sama vanha Mulder, Scully on sama vanha Scully, ihan niinkuin ennenkin.

I have started reading Donna Tartt's The Goldfinch. She got me hooked on page one. David Hughes' The Greatest Sci-fi Movies Never Made is next on my "to read"-list.

What's distracting my reading is The X-Files. Chris and I decided to re-watch the whole series, so most of our evenings go like this: "Want to watch an X-File?" "Sure." "Want to watch another X-File?" "Sure." "We could get one more in before bedtime." "Ok, let's do it." In case you are tempted to do what we are doing, be prepared: the first season is pretty terrible. But this is what matters: Mulder is still Mulder, Scully is still Scully, just as you remember them.
