Yön eläimiä / Nocturnal Animals

On tullut käytyä elokuvissa.

Chris and I have been going to the movies lately. Yesterday we saw Arrival, which was okay, but not really worth all the hype, we thought. Arrival reminded me of the reasons why I didn't care for Interstellar: too many gimmicks, too much tear-jerking. Arrival was not bad (and it is definitely much, much better than Interstellar) - it is actually very well made, well acted and it looks great, but I had hoped for more. Excellent sci-fi movies are hard to come by these days, and there are more mediocre ones than I care to remember. After having seen Arrival, Chris and I tried to think if any films released in the last 10 or 15 years would fit our "10 Greatest Sci-fi Movies of All Time"- lists. (Maybe Inception, or Moon. Honorary mention: District 9.)

A week earlier we had gone to see Nocturnal Animals, the latest Tom Ford movie, also starring Amy Adams. It was a tough one to watch, and the film stayed with me for days. One can't help but admire Ford's ability to create slightly distant but beautifully and carefully crafted visual worlds, where everything comes together: camera work, music, actors, everything. Nocturnal Animals is a difficult film (its themes revolve around revenge and power in human relationships) but I recommend it fully. In Nocturnal Animals, Ford visits similar themes as he did in his previous work A Single Man (which I love) - endless loneliness and beautiful hopelessness of human existence. This time around, those themes hit home in a manner more cruel than is imaginable. One can't look away though, because there is beauty in all of it.

All That Jazz

Yläasteikäisenä saavuin toisinaan kotiin ennen kaikkia muita perheenjäseniä. Huhuilin ovelta, kukaan ei vastannut. Olin yksin kotona. Hiivin levysoittimelle, kaivoin esille hyllystä isäpuolen Shelly Manne & His Men at the Black Hawk-vinyylin tai Oscar Peterson Trion Another Day:n. Kuuntelin jazzia jokseenkin salaa, koska kaverit luukuttivat poprockhittejä ja fanittivat poikabändejä, kuten asiaan olisi eittämättä kuulunut. Sitten unohdin jazzin ja tilalle tulivat grunge ja 90-luvun puolivälin brittibändi-invaasio.

Viime vuosituhannen vaihteessa näin The Talented Mr Ripley-elokuvan, jossa Matt Damonin esittämä Tom Ripley tutustuu jazziin tehdäkseen vaikutuksen Jude Lawn roolihahmoon, Charlie Parkeria intohimoisesti fanittavaan Dickieen. Yökerhossa Tom laulaa My Funny Valentinen.

When I was in my early teens, I was often the first one home from school. I'd holler from the door, no one answered, which meant that I was home alone. I snuck up to the record player, got out my stepdad's vinyls: Shelly Manne & His Men at the Black Hawk, or Oscar Peterson Trio's Another Day. My jazz fandom was somewhat of a secret, because all of my friends were listening to the pop/rock hits or the boy bands of that era, as teenagers were more or less supposed to do. Eventually I forgot about jazz when grunge and the mid-1990s Brit band invasion came along.

Somewhere in the turn of the millennium I saw The Talented Mr Ripley, where Tom Ripley, played by Matt Damon, learns to know jazz in order to impress and intrude into the life of Jude Law's character, Charlie Parker-loving Dickie. In a smoky nightclub Tom sings My Funny Valentine. It started from there - my clumsy, slow return to the world of jazz. I don't claim to understand anything about the technicalities of jazz, nor do I consider myself a particularly musical person. I approach jazz with childlike curiosity and wonder, and these days I listen to anything from ragtime to swing, from commercial big band music to bebop, anything from the East Coast to the West Coast, from Brazilian bossa nova all the way to current Finnish jazz. (The only stuff I try to avoid is hardcore fusion, because I find it simply unpleasant.) Recently I've been listening to good old Duke Ellington, Chick Webb and Benny Goodman. I recommend whole-heartedly!

1930-luvun huumaa / Eye candy from the 1930s

Suosittelen lämpimästi Charlotte Fiell'in definitive sourcebook-muotikirjoja kaikille vintage-muodista tai kauniista vaatteista kiinnostuneille.

I warmly recommend Charlotte Fiell's fashion sourcebooks to anyone interested in vintage fashion (or just great style in general). The spread above is from 1930s Fashion - The Definitive sourcebook that I bought recently - the drawings and the clothes are stunning. The book has almost 600 pages, so there is plenty of inspiration to go around! I had some trouble finding the equivalent 1920s book, but I finally managed to order a copy from Waterstone's.

Hyviä aikoja / Good times

Viimeiset ties kuinka monta vuotta olen nyrpistellyt nenääni Flow Festivalille (jos joku on yksimielisesti suosittua ja suotavaa, siinä on oltava jotain vikaa), mutten enää. Vietin kaksi hienoa päivää Suvilahdessa siskon kanssa ja liityn kokemuksen perusteella Flow-fanien joukkoon iloiseen. Flow on kaikin puolin kiva festari: kaunis miljöö, hyvät esiintyjät, leppoinen fiilis, erinomainen ruoka, tarpeeksi vessoja, ei liiallista kaljaörinää.

Parasta: saippuakuplia puhaltelevat, kauniisti pukeutuneet tytöt ja pojat, hieman harmaantunut mutta hurmaava Belle and Sebastianin keulahahmo Stuart Murdoch, Timo Lassyn ilta-auringossa hymyillen jammaileva jazzbändi, maistuvat hodarit, Pet Shop Boysin elektrinen valoshow hittiputkineen, yleisön seassa meistä parin metrin päässä autuaasti Beckin tahtiin tanssiva Florence Welch, jolla oli vähän liian pienet puukengät muttei yhtään meikkiä. Lämpimät, pimenevät illat, yleisön rauhallinen vaellus pois festarialueelta yöllä. Ensin kaikki kävelemme samaan suuntaan, mutta liikennevaloissa erkanemme.

I spent the weekend at Flow Festival in Helsinki with my sister. I've been suspicious of Flow for some time, because everyone seems to love it unconditionally - hence there must be something wrong with it. Take it from me though: Flow is just as lovely as they say. There's plenty of good music to choose from, a beautiful setting with gorgeous lights and intricate details, happy people, awesome food. I am a convert.

This is Flow: pretty girls and boys casually blowing soap bubbles into the air, charming Stuart Murdoch of Belle and Sebastian talking to his audience about the Helsinki tram network, stunningly energetic jazz in the early evening sunshine by Timo Lassy and his band, tasty hot dogs, an electric show from the Pet Shop Boys. When Beck was playing on the main stage on Sunday, Florence Welch of Florence + The Machine came out to dance just a few feet away from us, wearing clogs a little too small, and not an ounce of make-up. Late at night the people walked away from the festival area in herds of ecstatic sheep, all strolling slowly but surely in the same direction, before finally going their separate ways at the traffic lights.

Uusi paras kaveri / Our new best friend

Lisäksi Dysonin rullaava matoille tarkoitettava roottorisysteemi on lemmikkieläinkotiin ihan mahtava: kissankarvat saavat todellakin kyytiä. En vaihda imuria enää koskaan. Dyson nyt ja ikuisesti!

There are some things I miss from the United States: 24-hour grocery stores (Wegman's), big movie theaters, farmers' markets and the smart recycling system. One of the things I've missed the most is having an upright vacuum cleaner. European vacuum cleaners are canister types that you have to drag behind you, in a crouched down position, may I add, if you are 5'11". Two years ago we invested several hundreds of euros on a test-winning Electrolux vacuum cleaner that did nothing but move cat hair from one part of the rug to the other and make our backs sore.

When the crappy Electrolux broke down at around Christmas, I started to look for an upright Dyson, and finally, after what felt like an impossible task, found almost the same model we had back in the US. Let me tell you, vacuuming has never been this awesome. I don't understand why they don't sell upright vacuums in Finland - they are so much easier to use, especially if you're tall. Dyson's rug/carpet-function is genius for a household with pets - there is no cat hair in sight. We're never looking back. Dyson now and forever!
