Poncho

Olen aina pitänyt ponchoja maailman typerimpinä vaatekappaleina. Ne soveltuvat vain aurinkoisiin välikausikeleihin mutta näyttävät talvisilta, ne eivät pidä tuulta ja estävät olkalaukun kantamisen. Pari viikkoa sitten bongasin tämän Arolan kutomon priimakuntoisen villaponchon kirpparilta. Ostin sen vietäväksi siskon vintage-puotiin, mutta vedin sen sitten kuitenkin kotona päälle, ihan huvikseni. Ehkä se on tuo mielenkiintoinen piippukaulus, ehkä vaalenharmaan ja luonnonvalkoisen kaunis yhdistelmä, ehkä epäsymmetrinen kuviointi, joka miellyttää. Päätin hyllyttää ennakkoluuloni ja jätin ponchon omaan kaappiin. Siinä on jotain erityistä.

Arolan kutomon vaiheista voi lukea täältä. Tämän ponchon suunnitellut Pirkko Mäki oli Arolan kutomon perustajan Pirkko Arolan tytär. Näitä ponchoja vietiin myytäväksi mm. Yhdysvaltoihin 1960-luvulla.

I've always considered the poncho the most useless piece of clothing. Ponchos can only really be worn in sunny mid-season weather, but they look very winter-y. Wind blows right through them, and they make carrying off-the-shoulder bags very tricky. A couple of weeks ago I found this Finnish made vintage Arolan kutomo poncho at the flea market. I bought it to take it to my sister's vintage shop, but for some reason I found myself trying it on at home. Maybe it's the interesting collar, maybe the pretty combination of ivory and grey, maybe the asymmetrical pattern that appeals to me. I fought my prejudice and decided to keep the poncho. There's just something special about it.

Information on Arolan kutomo is available here (sorry, in Finnish only). Turns out that Pirkko Mäki, who designed the poncho, was the daughter of Pirkko Arola, who founded the Arolan kutomo company back in the 1940s. Mäki's ponchos were exported all the way to the US back in the 1960s.
