Viime vuoden vaatteista / About last year's clothes

Olen nyt parin vuoden ajan kirjannut ylös kaikki vaate- ja asustehankintani. Vuodenvaihteessa ynnäilen ja summaan, ja katselen, mitkä ostokset olivat hyviä ja mitkä huteja, mitä vaatteita tuli käytettyjä ja mitä lähti kiertoon, ja miksi. Siten tulee keräiltyä erinäisiä oivalluksia ja ideoita kuluttamisesta, vaatteista ja tyylistä.

Viime vuonna on tullut ymmärrettyä seuraavaa:

Vaikka ihmiset nykyään kyselevätkin minulta työpaikalla, olenko menossa juhliin, pidän siitä, että nätit, kimaltavat vaatteet eivät enää loju vaatekaappini perukoilla. Jos tekee mieli pukeutua töissä glitteriin tai samettiin, voin sen ihan hyvin tehdä, kunhan sitten tasapainotan kokonaisuutta jostain toisesta päästä.

Kotivaatteiden kanssa olen skarpannut. Toisinaan, etenkin näillä järkyttävillä pakkasilla, olen kyllä luuhannut kotona muhkeissa villaneuleissa ja verkkareissa, mutta noin yleisesti ottaen näytän kenties kotona vähän nätimmältä kuin vielä vuosi sitten. Kirjailtu kotitakki oli vuoden paras ostos. Hyvänä kakkosena tulevat Mamaha-turbaanit, joita saa Frida marinasta.

Yhtenä olennaisena havaintona pitää myöntää, että minulla on ihan liikaa koruja, ja niitä ostan, kun ne ovat useimmiten euron-parin kirppislöytöjä. Koruja pitää karsia, koska minulla ei ole aikaa käyttää niitä kaikkia ja on sääli jättää niitä käyttämättä.

Hasardiostoksia tuli viime vuonna tehtyä muutama. Ilmeisesti vielä tämänkin ikäisenä sorrun toisinaan ostamaan tai säilömään vaatekaapissani vaatteita, jotka eivät ole just eikä melkein, ne eivät istu kropalleni, tai jotka ovat "jonkun muun". Ja edellisestä aasinsiltana: on kuitenkin ihan ookoo, jos haluaa kokeilla jotain uutta. Itselle pitää olla armollinen. Nykyään toitotetaan joka tuutista sitä hienovaraisesti muokatun oman tyylin löytämistä ja siinä pysyttelyä, mutta eihän se sitä tarkoita, että joutuisi väkipakolla pukeutumaan siihen yhteen ja samaan muottiin aina. Vaihtelu on sallittua ja se on myös kivaa.

For the past couple of years I've kept a journal of my style-related purchases and activities. At the end of the year or at the beginning of the new one, I tally up the numbers and try to figure out the good buys and the bad ones, the clothes I wore the most and the ones I got rid of. It's a simple way to keep track of my buying habits and the types of clothes and accessories I wear the most. 

Here are some of my thoughts regarding last year's clothing-related adventures:

These days, quite a few people ask me if I'm going to a party after work, because I've started wearing a bit of velvet, sparkle or sequins at the office. I got tired of keeping my nicest clothes in the closet, and with a little bit of balancing, I've managed to bring a little bit of glamour to my office life. 

It's been an excellent idea to put some effort into wearing nicer clothes at home, too. It's been so cold lately that I have to confess that I've had to layer up sweaters and chunky cardigans... but on average I think my home-wear is much nicer than what it was before. My embroidered home coat (in the first picture) was the purchase of the year. Mamaha-turbans are a close second - you can get them at Frida marina.

A general confession: I have way too many pieces of jewelry and I keep buying more. I buy earrings at flea markets for a euro or two a pair, so they start to pile up. It's time to do some culling...

I made some mistakes last year, but hey, no one's perfect! Some items seemed great and sensible when I bought them (a pair of flat, brown woven leather shoes, or a light blue silk-mix cardigan come to mind), but it turned out later on that I just wasn't going to wear them (so storing them in the closet is just stupid), the fit was all wrong, that the overall style wasn't "me". 

In connection to the issue of something being "me"... it's good to try something different every now and then. One shouldn't feel bad about it. The fashion media is full of articles and stories about needing to find one's own style, curating it carefully, and sticking to it. But that doesn't mean you can't shop outside the box every now and then...
