Ruosteessa / Rust

Jostain kumman syystä pukeutuminen yhteen ja samaan väriin päästä varpaisiin kiinnostaa. Tänään olin ruosteessa.

For some strange reason I've been feeling monochromatic recently. Today I'm all rusty.

Kuolleissa eläimissä / Wearing dead animals

Ei tästä pääse yli eikä ympäri. Syksy on saapunut. Kaivoin varastosta villapaidat ja -takit, nahkahameet ja huivit. Fiilistelin syysvaatteita. Vaikka kesän poistuminen keskuudestamme tuntuu tänä vuonna vaikeammalta kuin aikoihin, on siinä hyviäkin puolia: kerrospukeutuminen, satunnainen kaunis syysvalo, lämpimät neuleet, ruska.

Pipo on lahja Chrisiltä.

Kyse on aina kuitenkin eläimen tappamisesta.

There's no way around it: fall is here. I dug out my sweaters and cardigans from storage, my leather skirts and scarves. As sad as I am about summer's passing this year, there are some benefits to cooler weather: layering, the occasional pretty autumn sunlight, warm knitwear and ruska. It's a great Finnish word that means fall colors and/or autumn foliage.

The suede coat, silk blouse, wool cardigan, leather skirt and shoes are all flea market finds, the sunglasses are Ray-Ban. The beanie is a present from Chris, from a time when we hadn't even met yet. My outfit got me thinking about jesse.anne.o's recent post about fashion and animals. So one day I post cute cat pictures and consider myself animal-rights-aware, and the next day I'm clad in clothes made of cows and sheep. Not cool, totally hypocritical. I guess at least I don't go around telling others that my leather skirt is a natural thing to wear because our wild ancestors used to do so in the woods. One hears things like that every so often: how "otherwise the meat industry's by-products go to waste", or that "leather is ecological". Ugh, it's all just embarrassingly lame, because many animal-based materials, like leather, are not ecological. I'd never dare claim that wearing animal-based materials is free of ethical dilemmas. Leather as by-product of the meat industry is always a direct result of animals being harnessed to satisfy human wants and desires, not needs, and leather is just one example. Wool and silk production are problematic as well.

Living in the Finnish countryside I get to see beautiful, free-roaming and grazing cattle on a daily basis. I can visit the farms and witness the love and care that these animals receive - most farmers depend on their animals' welfare. I am not against animal-based products per se, but I am against mistreatment of animals. As a consumer I'd like to be certain that the leather on my back is that of a happy cow who lived a good, long life. But they don't label clothes with tags like that. On the whole, the links between the meat and the clothing industries are just too shady and unclear. What's clear is the end result: that animals get killed. The whole issue is a massive can of worms, full of ambiguous questions regarding the natural or interrupted cycle of life, ethics of killing, ethics of benefiting, freedom of living beings and dependence.

Audrey

Audreylla on taipumus syödä kaikkea vihreää. Tänään ruokalistalla ovat maljakkoon asettelemani auringonkukkien lehdet.

Audrey eats her greens. It seems that my sunflowers are on the menu today.

Kylmä / Cold

Yön aikana tuli kylmä. Tuulee. Aamulla piti kaivaa pipo varastosta.

It got cold and windy overnight. I had to look for a beanie before heading to work.

Viikonloppuna / The weekend

Heräsin eilen kurkku kipeänä, pää tukossa. Väsytti. Ulkona oli pilvistä, näyttää syksyltä. Päätin olla tekemättä mitään. Lauantaina tein pihatöitä. Istutin tulppaaneja, siirsin muutamaa perennaa, lapioin multaa, haravoin sembramännyn neulasia isoihin kasoihin. Kuljeskelin tontin laidalla, mutustelin omenoita. Ripustin pyykit ulos kuivumaan. Ne olivat vielä illallakin kosteita.

Yesterday I woke up with a headache and a sore throat. The weather has shifted, as predicted. I decided to not do anything all day. On Saturday I managed to do quite a bit of yard work. I shoveled dirt, raked pine needles, planted some tulip bulbs, moved a couple of perennials. I walked around on our property, munched on some delicious apples. (Last year we got a lot more apples, but this year they are tastier.) I listened to the crickets - I have a feeling they'll be gone by today or tomorrow. I did some laundry and hung it outside to dry. The clothes, among them some cool new flea market finds, were still damp in the evening.

Ennen hallaa / Before the freeze

Tietävätköhän kukat, että pakkanen tulee? Ritarinkannuksen toinen kukinta on upeimmillaan. Vaaleanpunaisesta puuliljasta on vasta auennut ensimmäinen kukka. Verbena päätti ryhtyä kukkimaan toistamiseen oikein urakalla; sen tuoksu leijailee ihanasti pihalla. Vielä päivä, sitten tulee halla.

I wonder if plants know that a change is coming. My delphiniums are flowering for the second time this summer. The buds of the pink lilies are finally opening. The verbena decided to start flowering again and our whole yard bathes in its beautiful scent. After today the overnight temperature drops to below freezing.
