Ruosteessa / Rust

Jostain kumman syystä pukeutuminen yhteen ja samaan väriin päästä varpaisiin kiinnostaa. Tänään olin ruosteessa.

For some strange reason I've been feeling monochromatic recently. Today I'm all rusty.

Kuolleissa eläimissä / Wearing dead animals

Ei tästä pääse yli eikä ympäri. Syksy on saapunut. Kaivoin varastosta villapaidat ja -takit, nahkahameet ja huivit. Fiilistelin syysvaatteita. Vaikka kesän poistuminen keskuudestamme tuntuu tänä vuonna vaikeammalta kuin aikoihin, on siinä hyviäkin puolia: kerrospukeutuminen, satunnainen kaunis syysvalo, lämpimät neuleet, ruska.

Pipo on lahja Chrisiltä.

Kyse on aina kuitenkin eläimen tappamisesta.

There's no way around it: fall is here. I dug out my sweaters and cardigans from storage, my leather skirts and scarves. As sad as I am about summer's passing this year, there are some benefits to cooler weather: layering, the occasional pretty autumn sunlight, warm knitwear and ruska. It's a great Finnish word that means fall colors and/or autumn foliage.

The suede coat, silk blouse, wool cardigan, leather skirt and shoes are all flea market finds, the sunglasses are Ray-Ban. The beanie is a present from Chris, from a time when we hadn't even met yet. My outfit got me thinking about jesse.anne.o's recent post about fashion and animals. So one day I post cute cat pictures and consider myself animal-rights-aware, and the next day I'm clad in clothes made of cows and sheep. Not cool, totally hypocritical. I guess at least I don't go around telling others that my leather skirt is a natural thing to wear because our wild ancestors used to do so in the woods. One hears things like that every so often: how "otherwise the meat industry's by-products go to waste", or that "leather is ecological". Ugh, it's all just embarrassingly lame, because many animal-based materials, like leather, are not ecological. I'd never dare claim that wearing animal-based materials is free of ethical dilemmas. Leather as by-product of the meat industry is always a direct result of animals being harnessed to satisfy human wants and desires, not needs, and leather is just one example. Wool and silk production are problematic as well.

Living in the Finnish countryside I get to see beautiful, free-roaming and grazing cattle on a daily basis. I can visit the farms and witness the love and care that these animals receive - most farmers depend on their animals' welfare. I am not against animal-based products per se, but I am against mistreatment of animals. As a consumer I'd like to be certain that the leather on my back is that of a happy cow who lived a good, long life. But they don't label clothes with tags like that. On the whole, the links between the meat and the clothing industries are just too shady and unclear. What's clear is the end result: that animals get killed. The whole issue is a massive can of worms, full of ambiguous questions regarding the natural or interrupted cycle of life, ethics of killing, ethics of benefiting, freedom of living beings and dependence.

Audrey

Audreylla on taipumus syödä kaikkea vihreää. Tänään ruokalistalla ovat maljakkoon asettelemani auringonkukkien lehdet.

Audrey eats her greens. It seems that my sunflowers are on the menu today.

Kylmä / Cold

Yön aikana tuli kylmä. Tuulee. Aamulla piti kaivaa pipo varastosta.

It got cold and windy overnight. I had to look for a beanie before heading to work.

Viikonloppuna / The weekend

Heräsin eilen kurkku kipeänä, pää tukossa. Väsytti. Ulkona oli pilvistä, näyttää syksyltä. Päätin olla tekemättä mitään. Lauantaina tein pihatöitä. Istutin tulppaaneja, siirsin muutamaa perennaa, lapioin multaa, haravoin sembramännyn neulasia isoihin kasoihin. Kuljeskelin tontin laidalla, mutustelin omenoita. Ripustin pyykit ulos kuivumaan. Ne olivat vielä illallakin kosteita.

Yesterday I woke up with a headache and a sore throat. The weather has shifted, as predicted. I decided to not do anything all day. On Saturday I managed to do quite a bit of yard work. I shoveled dirt, raked pine needles, planted some tulip bulbs, moved a couple of perennials. I walked around on our property, munched on some delicious apples. (Last year we got a lot more apples, but this year they are tastier.) I listened to the crickets - I have a feeling they'll be gone by today or tomorrow. I did some laundry and hung it outside to dry. The clothes, among them some cool new flea market finds, were still damp in the evening.

Ennen hallaa / Before the freeze

Tietävätköhän kukat, että pakkanen tulee? Ritarinkannuksen toinen kukinta on upeimmillaan. Vaaleanpunaisesta puuliljasta on vasta auennut ensimmäinen kukka. Verbena päätti ryhtyä kukkimaan toistamiseen oikein urakalla; sen tuoksu leijailee ihanasti pihalla. Vielä päivä, sitten tulee halla.

I wonder if plants know that a change is coming. My delphiniums are flowering for the second time this summer. The buds of the pink lilies are finally opening. The verbena decided to start flowering again and our whole yard bathes in its beautiful scent. After today the overnight temperature drops to below freezing.

Ensi kuussa / Next month

I've never really liked the term girl crush. But if it has to be used, I have two: the first is Tilda Swinton, the second is Annie Clark. They both have inexplicable energy and courage to be different. I was a little shocked to notice that there were still tickets available for St. Vincent's Helsinki concert next month. I immediately grabbed two for myself and my sister

Vekkejä ja krokettia / Pleats and croquet

According to the weather forecast it's the last week of warm weather in Finland. The mornings are chilly now, but the sun still shines warmly in the afternoons. Yesterday Chris and I played a match of croquet after I came home from work. I lost, but it didn't matter. It felt like a lovely summer day, full of light.

Everything I'm wearing is thrifted.

Aamusumu / Morning mist

Kuin olisi herännyt toisessa maailmassa. Kirpeä, kylmä aamu, on ehkä ollut hallaa yöllä. Nurmi on litimärkä, ilma vielä kosteudesta raskas. Järveltä ei kuulu yhdenkään vesilinnun kutsua. Ehkä jossain pellon reunalla kurkipari nousee siiville, suuntaa kohti etelää. Aurinko paistaa jo, mutta sumu ei hälvene.

Waking up to a different world. Cold, crisp morning, perhaps there was a hint of frost overnight. The air is still, the grass wet in this blanket of humidity. Not a single bird calls from the lake. Somewhere, I know, cranes prepare for lift-off, for warmer lands. The sun is already up, the mist won't lift.

Oli päällä / I wore

Päivän värit ovat puuteri, persikka ja viininpunainen: kirpparilta ostettu puuvillaneule, Jasmin Santasen second hand-hame, korallikoru kirpparilta, kengät mitkä lie ikivanhat. Guccin aurinkolasit ovat palvelleet minua jo yli vuosikymmenen.

Today's colors are powder pink, peach and burgundy. I'm wearing a flea market sweater, Jasmin Santanen second hand skirt, coral pendant from a flea market, and old, old, old Oxfords. The sunglasses are from Gucci - I've had them for over a decade now.

Näinä päivinä / These are the days

Näinä päivinä aurinko vielä lämmittää, mutta lehdet eivät jaksa enää vihertää, nuput jäävät ehkä aukeamatta. Aamuisin ilma on kostea ja hapekas. Multa tuoksuu, viimeiset kesän rippeet.

These are the days when the sun still feels warm, but the leaves have started to turn. The flower buds open sluggishly, soon they'll remain closed. In the mornings the air is misty, heavy, full of oxygen. It smells of dirt, of what remains when summer is gone.

"Because you're worth it"?

Puolitoista vuotta sitten toimittaja Sanna Ukkola kirjoitti ansiokkaasti blogissaan L'Oréalin ja muiden mainostajien ja suomalaisten muotilehtien välisestä suhteesta. Ukkolan kirjoituksesta kävi seikkaperäisesti ilmi, että suurella mainostajalla on valtaa myös lehtien toimitukselliseen sisältöön. Ukkolan ruotima Gloria-lehden Kaunis Gloria-liite nousi tuolloin räikeimmäksi esimerkiksi. Mainostulojen vastineeksi muotilehdet kirjoittavat mainostajista toimituksellista sisältöä. Mainostajia miellytetään kaikin tavoin, koska lehdet elävät ilmoitustuloista. "Jos L’Orkku vetää euronsa pois, lehti on konkurssissa. Se on kylmä totuus pienistä lehdistä, eräs johtavassa asemassa työskentelevä toimittaja kertoo."

Nyt Ukkola palaa ruotimaan samaa aihetta uudessa postauksessa. Edellisen postauksen jälkeen Gloria joutui Kaunis Gloria-liitteessä olleiden epäselvyyksien vuoksi Julkisen sanan neuvoston eteen ja sai langettavan tuomion. JSN:oon kannellut Anna-lehden toimittaja siirrettiin työstään syrjään vaarannettuaan työnantajansa suhteet kosmetiikkajättiin. Glorian omistava Sanoma Magazines Finlandin toimitusjohtaja ilmoitti Helsingin Sanomissa, ettei JSN:n tuomio muuta mitään.

Markkinavoimat jylläävät, iso bisnes on rumaa.

About a year and a half ago, Finnish reporter Sanna Ukkola wrote a fabulous exposé about L'Oréal's influence over the editorial content of some Finnish fashion magazines. In her story, Ukkola dissected the relationships between fashion magazines and their advertisers: how magazines, in order to retain their advertisers, sell out on journalistic integrity. A particularly glaring example came from the Finnish fashion magazine Gloria and its beauty supplement, Kaunis Gloria, which was full of advertisements from L'Oréal - but the company was also represented in the editorial content to the point of exhaustion. Ukkola interviewed a bunch of people and reported that such practices were commonplace. Magazines can't survive without their advertisers, and in exchange for ad money, the advertisers get to dabble in the editorial content as well. "If L'Oréal withdraws its ads, a magazine is over and done with. That's the cold truth about small magazines", an anonymous reporter said in Ukkola's piece.

Now Ukkola is back with another story on the same topic. After her previous piece, Gloria magazine had to face disciplinary measures from a Finnish journalism watch dog, JSN. The head of the publishing company stated in an interview with Finland's largest newspaper that nothing was going to change. A reporter for Anna, a Finnish fashion magazine, who took up the Gloria case with the watch dog, lost her position, because she endangered Anna's relationship with L'Oréal. Three journalism students wrote their thesis on the case. The head of L'Oréal Finland's selective department agreed, on certain terms, to be interviewed for the thesis, but offered no comments when the interview took place. The conditions under which the interview was conducted forbid the students from representing their thesis outside of their school, and the thesis will not be available online. That's what they got in exchange for the L'Oréal boss' "no comments". So much for freedom of information.

None of this should be all that surprising. Money talks, big business is ugly, and who in their right mind would believe a word that was printed on women's magazines anyway... right? I remember in my years of working as a model in the late 1990s and early 2000s, what it was like working backstage at editorial fashion shoots. The editorials would often have make-up sponsors, whose products would then be mentioned alongside the editorial in the magazine. The sponsor's products were often of cheap quality and they wouldn't last under the harsh lights used at the shoots, so the make-up artists would use their own make-up kits instead to create the look that was desired. They would then find equivalent colors and shades from the sponsor's kit, and those products would be then mentioned in the editorial as the ones that had been used in creating the look for the shoot. Essentially, they lied. This happened all the time.

All this is making me think of advertisements and commercial content in blogs. Commercial blogging is discussed in the Finnish fashion and beauty blogosphere every so often, and many call for guidelines and practices such as taxing free gifts bloggers receive from cosmetic companies and fashion houses. But if the mainstream fashion media engages in muddling journalistic principles on a daily basis, why would we insist on posing harsher standards on bloggers? If the large scale system is rotten on the inside, why should bloggers, who essentially operate outside of the system, have to follow any rules?

Lempimekko / My New Favorite Dress

I bought the dress at a flea market this spring. It's a little big for me, but oh well, sometimes a little big is just right. The dress is made of super light polyester, which, to my surprise, actually breathes! I'll be wearing it with tights and a chunky cardigan later this fall. The earrings are from Moonk, a cute little shop that's conveniently located within my sister's second hand store, Frida marina. I bought the shoes this spring, they were new.

The truth is out there

Aloitin juuri Donna Tartt'n Tiklin. Jäin koukkuun, jo ensimmäiseltä sivulta. David Hughes'n The Greatest Sci-fi Movies Never Made on seuraavana lukulistalla.

Lukemistani häiritsee Salaiset kansiot. Minä ja Chris päätimme katsoa koko sarjan läpi, alusta loppuun. Iltamme sujuvat pääsääntöisesti näin: "Katsotaanko yksi jakso Salaisia kansioita?" "Joo." "Katsotaanko vielä yksi?" "Joo." "Vielä ehdittäisiin kolmaskin." "Anna mennä." Varoitus niille, jotka harkitsevat aloittavansa saman urakan: ensimmäinen tuotantokausi on aika kamala, ja joidenkin jaksojen katsominen on yhtä tuskaa. Mutta mikä parasta: Mulder on sama vanha Mulder, Scully on sama vanha Scully, ihan niinkuin ennenkin.

I have started reading Donna Tartt's The Goldfinch. She got me hooked on page one. David Hughes' The Greatest Sci-fi Movies Never Made is next on my "to read"-list.

What's distracting my reading is The X-Files. Chris and I decided to re-watch the whole series, so most of our evenings go like this: "Want to watch an X-File?" "Sure." "Want to watch another X-File?" "Sure." "We could get one more in before bedtime." "Ok, let's do it." In case you are tempted to do what we are doing, be prepared: the first season is pretty terrible. But this is what matters: Mulder is still Mulder, Scully is still Scully, just as you remember them.

Kukkii / In Bloom

In bloom right now: heleniums, red pyrethrums, phlox, daylilies.

I couldn't find any heleniums in garden stores this spring. Finally, last week, I stumbled upon a bunch of them and bought all they had, despite the fact that heleniums are not the most cold resistant of perennials. I hope they survive the winter.

Miesten housuissa / Wearing the pants

Päällä lauantaina: kirpparipaita, kirpparihousut, kirpparivyö, kirpparikengät. Miesten housut ovat parasta, mitä minulle on vaaterintamalla tapahtunut aikoihin. Pillifarkkuihin ei ole paluuta!

I wore this on Saturday - everything is second hand. I've recently started to wear oversized men's trousers. They are the most comfortable piece of clothing one could imagine. No more skinny jeans!

Punahattu ja käpy / Echinacea meets pine cone

Punahatusta on tullut lempiperennani.

Käpy on muuten mahtavalta kuulostava sana.

I am in love with echinacea. I think it's my favorite perennial plant. The flowers look like they are from another world, and they bloom for a very long time. Mine have been flowering for almost a month now. The word echinacea, by the way, comes from the Greek echino, which means "sea urchin", due to the spiky texture of the central part of the flower. (I just learned that from Wikipedia.) In Finnish echinaceas are called "red hats". Language really is a way of seeing the world!

Something is eating our Swiss pine cones. The Finnish word for pine cone, käpy, is one of my favorite words.

Asupostausten paluu / The Return of the Outfit post

Harrastin ennen asukuvausta.

I used to take and post outfit pictures. I guess I don't have much of an eye for proportion, and taking pictures of the clothes I wore used to help me figure out what suited me and what not. It was also a lot of fun, keeping a log of what I wore. You learn a lot about yourself that way.

Today I twirled around in the garden and tried to take an outfit shot after a long, long break. It felt surprisingly difficult to be in front of the camera again. I felt overly self-aware, almost uncomfortable.

Uudet uudet vaatteet / New new clothes

Päätin osallistua Vuosi ilman uusia vaatteita-haasteeseen. Pääpaino haasteen tittelissä on sanalla uusia. Haaste nimittäin kehottaa ihmisiä kierrättämään ja ostamaan vaatteensa kirpputoreilta. Sehän minulle sopii, koska ostan joka tapauksessa suuren osan vaatteistani kirppareilta. Viimeisen vuoden aikana olen kuitenkin poikkeuksellisesti ostanut joitakin vaatteita uutena: olen ostanut kahdet nahkakengät, kaksi puuvillatoppia, kahdet rintsikat ja kaksi college-paitaa.

Netistä tilatussa korkkaamattomassa vaatteessa on jotain neitseellistä.

Emme tarvitse uutta, varsinkaan, koska vanha tavara on usein parempilaatuisempaa, persoonallisempaakin. Vanhalla tavaralla on paljon mielenkiintoisempi tarina kuin uudella. Välitän kirpparivaatteistani enemmän kuin uutena ostamistani. Niinpä liityn joukkoon iloiseen: en osta vuoteen uusia uusia vaatteita. Paitsi ehkä sukkahousuja. Syksy tulee.

I decided to take part in A Year Without New Clothes-challenge. The emphasis is on the word newThe purpose of the challenge is to help people recognize the unsustainable nature of the fast-fashion industry. The challenge encourages people to recycle and to buy clothes from flea markets and charity stores. That's fine by me, because I tend to buy almost all of my clothes from flea markets anyway. Except that in the past year or so, I have bought some new new clothes. I have bought two pairs of leather shoes, two tank tops, two bras and two sweatshirts. I also bought two pairs of men's swimming trunks when I only needed one pair.

When I gave myself permission to buy the first pair of shoes early this year, I thought to myself that I wasn't going to buy anything else that was new. However, I clicked a sweatshirt into my online shopping basket as well, because it was nice and it was on sale. The shoes were a decent purchase, as was the sweatshirt. I've worn them both. But since that first online shopping experience had been a quick, easy success, it felt way too easy to come back some weeks later, "just to browse". Before I knew it, I was submitting a new order.

I haven't bought anything completely useless. I needed the tank tops and the bras, as my old ones were falling apart. I wear the shoes to work. I could have lived without the sweatshirts and the second pair of swimming trunks. It could be a lot worse, I guess, but I still feel guilty. There is no excuse for buying new new clothes.

I've noticed that shopping for new clothes is much more dangerous than flea marketing. It is perhaps easier to accumulate a lot of clothes at flea markets because everything is so cheap, but the thrill of new new clothes is a whole different ball game. There is something intoxicating about new clothes. The ruffling sound of tissue paper as one opens the parcel from an online store, the slight scent of fabric dye, the firm, unwashed feel of the textile. It's as if those spiffing new clothes only existed for me. It's easy to fool oneself into thinking that, especially when you don't get a glimpse into the online store's storage facility, where hundreds of identical pieces of clothing fill every corner.

We know that the world is full of stuff already. We don't need new stuff, especially since the old stuff is often of better quality, and it has more personality. The old stuff always has a story. And in the end, I care about my flea market finds much more than the new clothes I've bought. So here it is, then: no new clothes for an entire year. Although I might need some tights. Fall is upon us.

Vaateinspiraatiosta / On Style Inspiration

Syntyy erityinen into pukeutua tietyllä tavalla. On parasta, kun inspiraatio löytyy omasta vaatekaapista. Ei tarvitse ostaa mitään uutta.

Especially in the fall, my eye starts to travel: I want to see and feel a particular color, texture, shape or material. I get excited about getting dressed in the mornings. When the inspiration can be found in one's own wardrobe - well, it's just the best. There's no need to buy anything new.

Alkusyksynä pukeudun okranvärisiin pellavashortseihin, hailakan siniseen silkkipaitaan ja pörröneuleeseen. Kun sää viilenee, vaihdan alaosaksi puolisääreen ulottuvan villahameen. Lisäksi hakeudun vakosametin välittömään läheisyyteen. (Vakosamettikuva on jostain vanhasta Ellestä, parin vuoden takaa.)

This fall I will wear my ocher-colored linen shorts, a pale blue silk blouse and a fuzzy cardigan. When the weather gets cooler, I will switch from the shorts to a calf-length wool pencil skirt. And then there is corduroy. I feel the need to get close to corduroy. (The corduroy photo is from an old issue of US Elle.)

Bubbling under: colors of fruit and vegetables, lurex, suede, and the combo of olive green and red.

Uusi matka / A New Journey

On syyskuun ensimmäinen. Illat pimenevät jo nopeammin kuin haluaisin. Toissayönä lämpömittarissa oli neljä astetta. Syksyssä on paljon hyvää: palavan puun tuoksu leviää tupaan leivinuunista, pihka rätisee ja paukkuu liekeissä. Sieniaika alkaa. Voi vetää päälle nahkatakin. Ilma tuoksuu vielä elämältä.

Unikot vetelevät viimeisiään, uusi matka alkaa. Tervetuloa blogiin!

The first of September. It is starting to get dark earlier than I'd like. The overnight temperatures hover around 5 degrees celcius - that's around 40 degrees Fahrenheit. There are many things to be happy about: the scent of burning wood lingers in the kitchen, pine resin cracks and pops in the fire. It's time for mushrooms and leather jackets. The autumn air still smells like life.

The poppies are on their last legs. A new journey begins. Welcome to the blog!
