Siivouspäivän löytöjä / Cleaning Day finds

Kesä on muuten selvästikin täällä, koska hippeily kiinnostaa.

Chris is in the countryside, making sure our house looks just right for prospective buyers. I'm hanging out at home in the suburbs with the cats, going to work and spending time at flea markets. I found a cool pair of earrings (2 euros) and a belt (5 euros) during Cleaning Day, when a huge amount of parks and roadsides in Helsinki turn into one massive flea market. Summer is clearly here, because I feel tempted by hippy-ish clothes and accessories. I feel like wearing airy, light tunics or dresses over cropped trousers. Even better, if everything is linen.

Vappua vaan / May Day

Viime aikoina tapahtunutta:

Kevätsäätä, vähän räntää, sitten lisää kevättä. Esikoiden nuput aukeavat.
Hulluja pörhisteleviä fasaaneja piha täynnä.
Tuvassa soi jazz.

What's been going on lately:

Nice weather, cooler weather, then nice weather again. The primula are about to bloom.
Crazy pheasants have taken over our yard.
Jazz in the house.
A friend taught me how to deal with stress using acupoints. Work has been hectic, but I'm calmer, less angry.
Cats and 1950s sci-fi films.

Hei kaunokainen / Hello there, beautiful

Kuvaa aarteen facebookiin, monen muun takin joukkoon.

Minä bongaan netissä ryhmäkuvan takeista, jostain pilkottaa mielenkiintoista vekattua skottiruutua. Seuraa tekstailua ja puhelinsoitto. Ennen pitkää se sama vekkihelma, josta sisko tiesi minun pitävän, löytää tiensä kotiin.

There are benefits for having a sister who owns a secondhand store: every now and then she comes across a unique piece of clothing that she knows I'd really like. Sometimes, though, like two weeks ago, she'll find something (in this case, a coat) that I'd like but she won't let me know. She doesn't want to tempt me. She photographs the coat for the shop's facebook-page, with a bunch of other coats.

And then what happens: I see a group shot of random coats online, and notice a little bit of pleated tartan poking out in the picture. Is that a coat? What is that? Texting and phone calls follow. A week later, that something with the pleated hem, the one that my sister knew I'd like, has come home.

Lahjoja / Presents

Sain lauantaina huippukivoja synttärilahjoja: Dries Van Noten-juhlakirjan, upean vintage-korusetin, vyön, käsilaukun ja kirjan japanilaisista muotisuunnittelijoista. Äiti laittoi illalliseksi madekeittoa ja mutakakkua. Oli hyvä päivä.

I got awesome birthday presents on Saturday: a Dries Van Noten book, a beautiful vintage jewelry set, a handbag, a belt and a book about Japanese fashion designers. My mom made me burbot soup for dinner and mud cake for dessert. It was a good day.

Posti toi / Mail

Postipoika toi paketin siskolta. Siinä oli kaikenlaista ihanaa: hyvää teetä, kivoja vaatteita (niistä lisää myöhemmin), kaunis synttärikortti. Pakettien saamisessa parasta on kuitenkin itse laatikko, ainakin jos Audreyltä (tai muilta kissoiltamme) kysytään.

I got a package in the mail from my sister. It had awesome things in it: good tea, pretty clothes (more on those later), a beautiful birthday card. The best thing about getting packages is, of course, the box itself. Just ask Audrey, or any of our cats.

Herätys / Wake up

Pidän vanhoista pyöreistä herätyskelloista. Kokoelmani uusin tulokas on vasemmassa yläkulmassa komeileva paloautonpunainen, tsekkoslovakialainen Prim, jonka löysin viime lauantaina kirpputorilta. Oikealla yläkulmassa pikkuruinen saksalainen UMF Ruhla, alhaalla oikealla saksalainen Diehl's Princess, alhaalla vasemmalla neuvostoliittolainen Rostov.

I have a soft spot for old, round alarm clocks. My latest acquisition is the fire-truck red Czechoslovakian Prim (top left), which I found at a flea market on Saturday. Top right: small, German UMF Ruhla, lower right: German Diehl Princess, and bottom left: Soviet Rostov.

Uuden vuoden ensimmäinen / The first of the year

The first day of the year is gray and humid. The snow is melting fast. My Christmas presents make me smile: a tiny brass owl, an awesome Vertigo book, and two daft-looking kitties. (The real ones don't look quite this silly today - they are sleeping.)

I didn't commit to any actual new year's resolutions, but I am going to try to eat better, to exercise and read more, and to complain less. (I'm giving myself permission to complain a little bit today though: our vacuum cleaner broke over the holidays, and my laptop is on its last legs, as is my mobile phone. Ugh, that means that I have to spend money on technology.)
