Helsingissä / In Helsinki

Keskiviikkona matkasin Helsinkiin. Saavuin iltasella siskon luo. Juteltiin ja juotiin teetä. Torstaina fiilistelin vintage-ihanuuksia Hoochie Mama Janessa ja petyin perinpohjaisesti Kelloseppien työhuoneen palveluun. Kävelin tupakanhajuisessa tihkusateessa, korvanapeissa soi Shelly Manne & His Men at the Black Hawk.

On Wednesday I headed over to Helsinki. I arrived at my sister's apartment in the evening, we chatted and drank tea. On Thursday I admired vintage treasures at the awesome Hoochie Mama Jane, and failed to get any service at Kelloseppien työhuone, where I had dropped off a couple of watches for fixing back in December. The rainy streets smelled faintly of cigarettes, I walked along listening to Shelly Manne & His Men at the Black Hawk. I got some Chinese take-out and ate it at Frida marina. In the evening my sister and I browsed fashion magazines and ate way too much candy.

On Good Friday my sister and I went to Kaivarin Kanuuna fleamarket, and then to our brother's house for dinner. After a wonderfully elaborate meal I played with barbies with my niece, and watched another niece learn to crawl. Later that evening my sister, my nephew and I watched a crappy movie, and ate popcorn.

On Saturday my sister and I visited the Robert Mapplethorpe exhibition at Kiasma, the museum of contemporary art. It was more interesting to observe the other guests at the exhibition than the art itself. All sorts of archetypes came to light: the casual visitor, the art aficionado wearing all black, the hipster one who buys the exhibition poster to prove that he had been there. We walked to a couple of secondhand stores, bought some Russian tea, and spent a few minutes at a book store just before it closed. Then we ate ourselves silly at Mount Everest, our favorite Nepalese restaurant.

Easter Sunday morning was gray and drizzly. I stood at the tram stop, next to a blonde wearing an oversized, belted camel coat that she had paired with combat boots. I could hear the tram approaching from a distance - the nine is always the old noisy kind. At the Pasila railway station an older gentleman offered to carry my suitcase up the stairs, but I politely declined - he seemed irked. The station was quiet, all quiet.

  2. Sounds like you had a great time! Your last paragraph could be the beginning of a book. I want to know what happened the blonde wearing the camel coat!!
