Jotkut värit sopivat syksyyn / Some colors are better for fall than others

Vietin siskopäivää sunnuntaina. Tapasimme rautatieaseman kulmilla ja suuntasimme ensitöiksemme HAMiin katsomaan Yayoi Kusaman In Infinity-näyttelyä.

Tulevina kuukausina voin käydä rajattomasti ihailemassa Modigliania. Koko lysti maksaa 59 euroa vuodessa. (Lisää Museokortista täällä.)

Siskopäiviin kuuluvat tietysti keskustelut, kirppistelyt, kävely ja hyvä ruoka. Puhuimme kirjoista, elämästä, kuoleman pelosta, oman yrityksen perustamisesta ja syksyn väreistä. Olen viimeiset viikot kuunnellut töissä vihaisia asiakkaita, jotka haluaisivat eri värisiä vaatteita syksyyn: miksi aina näitä samoja sinapinkeltaisia, viininpunaisia, oliivinvihreitä, oransseja ja kanelinsävyjä! (Sitten he ostavat lisää mustaa ja harmaata.)

I spent Sunday with my sister, and as usual, our time together was spent walking, talking, flea-marketing and having a lot of good food. (Above are my charity shop finds: the prettiest mohair sweater, a somewhat crazy ankle length wool skirt, and a cute fluffy hat.)

We started the day at HAM (Helsinki Art Museum), where Yayoi Kusama's In Infinity-exhibition is currently taking place. Visiting Kusama's exhibit was the start of a new project of mine: to see more art. Recently I've felt the need to feed my curiosity and creativity, to challenge my thoughts, to see old things and new, beautiful things and things not so beautiful. I bought myself an early Christmas present: the Museum Card, which gives me free, unlimited entry to over 200 museums in the country. My sister and I weren't the only ones interested in Kusama on Sunday: the place was packed. There were long queues to see the dotted rooms and the video clips, and since both my sister and I have Museum Cards, we decided to come back another time. We stopped by downstairs to see Tove Jansson's murals and some Finnish artists' works that are a part of HAM's permanent collection. We talked about Tyko Sallinen's misogyny that's palpable in his work, and about Ellen Thesleff, a wonderful Finnish female artist, whose paintings have always appealed to me.

At home I kept thinking about the Museum Card - what an awesome idea it is. For 59 euros a year, I pretty much have unlimited access to the museums in and around Helsinki. I can stop by the National Gallery on my way home from work for ten minutes if I feel like it, I can just go stare at one painting and leave it at that. I don't have to worry about having to pay ten or twelve euros just to be shocked at some new exhibit of modern art - instead, I can take a look and leave, if stuff turns out to be too weird for my liking. I can do all this every day of the year if I want. I'm looking forward to the Modigliani exhibit, which opens on the 28th of this month.

Back to Sunday: we walked a lot, went to charity shops. We talked about books, about life and the fear of death, we talked about setting up my own business. We talked about fall colors: for the last two weeks I've encountered what feels like an unlimited amount of customers who have complained about the types of colors that are available in clothing right now: why is it always the same colors year after year - mustard yellow, dark red, olive green, orange, cinnamon brown - and where are the other colors? After they are done whining, they buy more black and gray. My sister and I agreed yesterday that some colors are just better suited for fall than others. They look their best in autumn light. I am not going to wear my pumpkin yellow wool jacket in April, am I.

(The pictures of me were taken by my sister.)
