Unelmista / On dreams

Paukkupakkanen huurruttaa hengityksen, ohut lumikerros narskuu jalkojen alla, järvi on jäätynyt.

I had some time to think during the holidays. As I've remembered to mention (perhaps too many times), last year was rough. I had two weeks off around Christmas and New Year, so I finally had the chance to reflect and dissect my thoughts and feelings regarding work, life, and what's going on. Taking care of one's own well-being and happiness is discussed a lot these days, but I sometimes wonder if it's still not okay to admit to being tired or to not liking one's job. The current economic climate in Finland suggests that everyone with a job, any job, should just feel lucky to have one, and that to say no to constant stress and exhaustion is selfish. With so many people being laid off, is it okay to want to work less, is it okay to want to have less responsibilities, less money, and perhaps more time for things like reading and writing? Is it okay to need a timeout?

On Thursday I returned to work. Nervously I told my boss that we are looking to relocate to the Helsinki area this spring, and that I have a job interview next Friday. No, I'm not giving my notice yet, I said, but I needed to say something now, because it felt right. My boss asked me if it's because of my work load, if it's because of the stress. I said yes and no, that I felt it was time for me to listen to my instincts and to look for my place in the world. I said that I didn't know where exactly I was going and when, but that I was going, eventually. "You are very brave," my boss said.

Last night I sat down with a group of friends for a cup of tea and some apple pie. One of us just opened a new cafe, another lost her job, a third talked about wanting to do something for herself for once in her life, a fourth said she wanted to relocate but felt that she couldn't, and a fifth, myself, confessed to being in the process of shifting gears. We talked about our careers, our lives, our dreams. We talked about what we are good at, what we know about ourselves and our skills, and we talked about what it's like not to know what one wants. We asked ourselves and each other if it's okay to change direction, to start something new, to dream, or do we need to settle. We didn't reach a conclusion, we were too busy protecting the idea of dreaming and change: that it's fundamentally good. We are all dreaming and changing, and we all need to do what's right for us.

It is very cold as we leave the cafe. The lake is frozen, a thin layer of snow crunches under our shoes. We can see our breath as we stand outside in the parking lot, saying our goodnights, gazing at the dark night sky with a million stars above us. I am still here, breathing in the countryside air that hurts my lungs. I start the car when frost starts to form on my eyelashes.

  1. The trees are dreaming too and we all know what happens to them in the Spring. Your photographs are wonderful. Thank you and all the best...

  2. It's wonderful that you have a group of women friends that you can talk about those things with in a cafe together; I admit I am envious of that. It sounds like you are moving in the right direction for you, and I look forward to seeing where this year leads you. Good luck on your job interview!

  4. Isoja päätöksiä ilmassa. Ihailen rohkeutta.
    Onnea valitsemallenne tielle!
